my hankooks do great in rain in FL...never really had any issues but i maintain my air pressure and replace my tires at 2/32 so they never get too bald
^^^ so summer tires cant withstand freezing temps??? If i do choose summer tires and im caught with them in freezing temps, what will happen?
Depends.
Is it dry and 25-30 degrees?
Just don't try cornering at 90 and you'll be fine.
Is it snowing heavily?
Pull over and call a cab. Your tires are worthless in this weather. That's why they call em summer tires.
Personally for any place that gets a snow "season" I highly recommend running summer tires outside this season, and dedicated winter tires during it... you'll outperform all seasons 365 days of the year this way...and by a large amount (25-40% depending on conditions for acceleration, handling, and braking).
For a place (like where I currently live) that you get like 2 days of actual snow a year, but some below-freezing temps, summers are fine and just avoid driving those 2 days a year.
The hankooks have gotten plenty of good remarks from the vette forum with the exception of the softer sidewalls, otherwise the performance seems to be nearly on par with the michelin ps2 on the street. Only thing to monitor is your treadlife...some members there have reported a far shorter life than expected (15k or so, which was about what my c6 goodyears lasted).
bad idea to get new tires on front and leave worn out tires on rear.
I heard the same thing. So another option is to squeeze out a few more 1000 miles out of the fronts until the rears are ready for replacement? Don't know what else to do at the moment. Can't afford four new tires.
