Default There's a ghost sitting in my passenger seat

For the last 2 days, the "red passenger icon without seat belt indicator" has been lit up on my dash with or without any actual passengers in the car I've also noticed that the seat belt warning no longer goes off if the car is in motion without wearing seat belts.

Has anyone encountered this? I personally don't mind losing that annoying seat belt warning, but I'm concerned that the deployment of the airbags have been compromised.

Could be the sensor in the seat to detect if a person is sitting in the seat is malfunctioning.

Has anyone sat there since? Maybe just sit on it for a little while to try to reset it?

After I drop someone off and start to drive away, the seat belt alarm goes off for about 20 seconds. It's real annoying.

Perhaps the sensor / switch is stuck... I'm guessing it's a mini-scale. If it's over a certain weight, it'll trigger the passenger light. In your case, the scale is stuck.

Trying sitting on there and bouncing on and off for a while and see if it will reset.

If not, then take it to the dealer....or exorcist *gasp*

Sadly I had the same problems with a Mercedes ML350, the dealer had to recalibrate something.

I've tried all of the above except resetting the battery. Unfortunately, I'm past my warranty...I will mention the issue to my SA this Saturday. Any idea how much it would cost to have this issue fixed? Possible recall?

I know that all seat belt issues are covered under warranty for the life of the vehicle (state or federal law, forget which). I believe all SRS systems are covered as well. Don't know if the sensor is covered, but seeing as how it affects the airbag deployment, I would imagine it is. Good luck.

Just get one of those fake dummies with a shirt and hat, buckle him in, and then you can drive in the car pool lane
