Question for anyone with Silverstar Ultra DRL/Hi-Beams (or other aftermarket bulb)
I'm thinking about replacing my DRL/Hi beam bulbs with an aftermarket bulb. I don't want to do LED, because I don't want to lose hi-beam functionality. One type of bulb I've seen talked about on CL a few times is Sylvania Silverstar Ultra 9005 bulbs (http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-9005S.../dp/B000M5W25E).
It's difficult to judge a bulb's true appearance in photos. Can anyone who's replaced their DRL/Hi-beam bulbs with aftermarket bulbs (specifically these Silverstars) tell me if they make an appreciable difference in either brightness or color?
I mainly want bulbs that won't look as dull and yellow as the current bulbs do as DRLs. How do these aftermarket bulbs look as DRLs, more white and less yellow?
Thanks!

If you want the HID look you should go with the LED kit. It still functions like a high beam but just not as bright.
I havent tried halogens but i doubt it is close to HID

I don't necessarily want the HID look. And I was under the impression that if you replace the DRL/hi-beams with LEDs, you just get one level of output/brightness; when you switch on high-beams the lights don't get brighter, and you lose hi-beam functionality. Is this the case?

When I first bought my IS350, I installed 7500K GPThunder bulbs on the low/high/and fog lights. No matter what temp or kind bulbs you use for the DRLs, it'll turn out the same yellow color as the stock bulbs. Bulbs only reach their specified color when they get full power. I didn't want to spend $60 to get LED DRLs and halogen bulbs will always be yellow so I just got the DRLs disabled since they just waste power anyhow.
I just got SilverStar 921 back-up bulbs today to get whiter back-up lights. It's not as white as the chrome ones I had but brighter than stock bulbs. SilverStars do give off more light but just barely. The color is somewhere between stock halogens and stock HIDs. To get white DRL's, you'll either have to get LEDs or simply get them disabled.

My 2011 IS 350 F-Sport has the factory HIDs. I switched out the halogen high beams and the fog lights with the Sylvania SilverStar Ultras. Can't tell a lot of difference in brighter whiter color or light output. I only had the car a short time prior to switching. Regardless, the Ultras are highly rated and I'm sure they're a improvement over factory bulbs.

I remember when I got the Silverstar bulbs for my DRL/High beams last year, they made my DRLs look dimmer as in not as bright as the factory 9005 bulbs. The high beams were slightly whiter. I basically ended up switching back because I didn't want dimmer DRLs.

The reason why you can't get the white light (HID) look from any bulb in the DRL/High Beam is because it will operate at half the power output. No matter what kind of halogen bulb you use will fail to produce any white light.
The bulb will not generate the optimal light (white color) because it's running off half the power on DRL.
If you want, you can try getting away with a yellow bulb. Some people on here has done that... this creates the rally car look.

Like everyone else is saying, the difference in color is minimal compared to stock. IMO, the only reason to get Silverstar Ultra 9005s would be to have a brighter high beam (useful for people who drive on dark, rural roads, or for people who like to blind drivers that cut you off).
Here's a thread with some pics of the Silverstar Ultra high beams/DRLs I had: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...ng-lights.html

Silverstars SUCK!!! Ive had a few sets and they are overpriced JUNK!! Not worth the money IMO they burn out quickly and dont look any better then the old school craptastic "blue" bulbs everyone used to run.
Dont waste your money, either disable the DRL or get yellow bulbs at least then they are supposed to be yellow.

no you will still have high beam from the low beam because there bi-xenon.....any halogen bulb would be yellow on the DRL because its only running half power......and i do't think i need super white on the high beam because I only use it for like couple minute....

I didn't use the SilverStar Ultras in my DRLs, but did use them for my low beams. I have Hella Xenons for my DRLs and for my fogs also. I love them! They are way brighter than the bulbs that were in it before, and I picked each pack of bulbs up for around $25 on Ebay.
