question about low oil light
Hey guys,
so my 2006 is250 has 140km's
i normally do oil changes every 5000-6000km's
on my last oil change they filled up 6L of synthetic oil.
it's only been around 4000km right now and my low oil engine light popped up.
does this car burn alot of oil? shouldn't i be able to run this car 7000-8000 before the low oil light comes on?
how much oil do you guys fill in your car? is 6L enough or too little?
thanks!

6.8 is closer to 7L
but ill check the distick.
while i was driving the low oil light actually turned off.
it could have been a glitch hopefully it doesn't turn back on

I'm lazy and never check my oil level but never had a light come on before my 5k oil change reminder. BTW I just take my car to the stealership because again I'm to lazy to even bother with something as simple as an oil change Sure it's expensive but I drive less than 7k a year so I could easily manage paying the stealership for the so called scheduled maintenance(which usually means an oil change).

Low Oil Light intermittently turns on
I'm starting to get this problem too (good thing I searched before starting a new thread!)... My car is currently at 97K miles and I'm wondering if anyone else sees this problem.
I did my 90K with Lexus of Stevens Creek (Santa Clara, CA) and gave them Royal Purple to put in. I forgot, though, if it was 5w-30 or 10w-30. Does 5w-30 tend to leak more than 10w-30 as the engine gets older? I remember someone telling me that I should switch at some point, but I forgot which way.
The light comes on intermittently and usually it's on a downhill on the freeway. I didn't use to have this problem. I'm currently back at Lexus of Stevens Creek and they're going to check real quick.
What are the possible issues? I'm thinking:
1. Oil leak
2. Oil burned up (leak internally)
3. Sensor malfunction

^ I'm at 85k and a few days ago the low engine oil warning come up for a third time in the life of the car. The second one was around a month ago and I topped it off with one quart and everything seemed fine until this recent one. I'm on extended warranty so I'll see what I can do about it. I talked to a Lexus tech that told me carbon buildup can get lodged on piston rings seizing them causing them to burn oil. I did recently have a check engine light from a misfire so there could be some truth to that. Anyone with any info on this?

^^^ That does sound probable... I remember a similar issue on my previous car where the piston rings did not seat properly during the break-in period which causes excessive oil burn.
If you are burning more than a quart of oil between your oil change, there is something wrong. Take it in for warranty work...

It depends on multiple variables: how much do you drive a year? Is it a lot of stop-and-go or highway?
I drive about 12K miles a year and it is all stop-and-go, and I will end up putting about a quart or so between my oil changes (which is usually around 7500 miles.) I use Mobil1 Full Synthetic. Particularly, the more stop-and-go you do will burn more oil than all highway.

I think you are confusing your units of measure. RI is in the US, where oil is sold in quarts. If you put in 6.8L, it means you are putting in 7.2 quarts, which is WAY too much.

Had brought it into Lexus of Stevens Creek. No issues with the car, but am down 1.5 quarts of oil.
I keep forgetting his last name, but my service advisor, Eric, is awesome. Really knowledgeable. He basically told me that synthetic oils have smaller molecules than conventional oils and that high performance synthetic oils like Royal Purple are even slicker than something like Mobil 1 (which is what they use at the dealership). Because of this, there's typically more burn-off with the high performance synthetic oils because they tend to slip through the piston rings. The benefit is that the rings are really well lubricated. The damage is likely more carbon build-up in the catalytic converter.
He said that these engines are really tight and so I don't need to change the weighting. I just bought two quarts of 5w-30 and topped off my engine.
