Default Looking to join the club - Help me buy a used IS

Hello all,

I formerly owned an '07 IS 350 back in 2008, but had to sell it when I went away to school. Now I'm determined to get another IS whether it be an IS 250 or 350 used. My budget is a lot less ~25k, which seems to put me in the range of an '06-'08 IS with 30k+ miles.

I have a few questions, that hopefully you all can help me out with.

I'm wondering if I should anticipate a lot of problems with the higher mileage vehicles, or will they still run great as long as they receive checkups every so many miles. Would an extended warranty be necessary, and if so, what am I looking to pay?

Also, I'll be living in upstate New York so I was initially thinking about the IS 250 AWD, but the more I read about cars in snow, it seems that just having a good set of snow tires outweighs the configuration.

Also, black or smokey granite mica? Thanks a lot!

probably not if the car is well kept. it should have all recall procedures implemented. carbon build up could be a problem for 250's. navigation screen seems to be breaking down here and there. check for rattles... etc. in general the car has decent quality.

depends if you can get a good deal on it. i dont know what is a good price, but i'm sure someone here will know about it.

just get the rwd if you are getting 250... if possible. getting a car for the winter season and suffer the rest of the three seasons is not feasible. I have awd, and it saved me like 3-4 times in the 3.5 year of ownership. someone here posted pros and cons of rwd and awd... you should check it out.

black is hard to maintain. you will have to check for swirl marks, but it is one classy color though. go with sgm if you do not like to washing the car yourself. I don't think you have much control over the colors, since you are buying an used car... you might get lucky though.

To give you an idea, my gf just purchased a CPO '08 on Memorial Day weekend.

It was a Glacier Frost Mica with navi, HIDs, 18s, and ventilated seats. It had 24,000 miles and we got it for $28,500 before tax.

where in FL are you? I have about 12 06+ IS250s in stock depending on what you want to pay. I think all should be certified as well

We can have delivered as well and I will get you a good "CL" deal

Hopefully this helps a bit: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...eed-input.html

In response to some of your above points:

1) If snow isn't terribly frequent and you aren't going to be doing a lot of driving in it, AWD probably isn't worth it since it just adds price, weight, and saps gas mileage. Invest the extra $1000-2000 you'd pay for AWD over RWD in a good set of winter wheels and tires.

2) Check the above post for warranty information and the contact info for Jerry Johnson, who you should contact for pricing. I absolutely recommend buying an extended warranty. I was in the exact same position as you - I wanted a 2IS and my budget was $25k. Ended up buying a 2007 IS350 with 56k miles with a Certified Pre-Owned warranty, which I extended to 5 years/125k miles. The original CPO warranty for 3 years/100k miles only added $1000 to the price of the car. One repair at Lexus can easily surpass $1000 so the warranty pays for itself quickly. My car's currently in the shop for the cam gear TSIB (referenced in the above post) which out of warranty would cost $1000+. Nav screen replacement, which is a somewhat common issue on these cars, is $1500-2000+.

All I ask is that when you find a car you want, call Jerry Johnson and get a quote on an extended Platinum VSA warranty (or extended CPO warranty, if the car you're looking at is CPO). At least once you know the prices you can judge for yourself whether you think it's worth it.

3) If you already owned a 350, buy another 350. You simply won't be satisfied with a 250. That's just my opinion though.

FYI on mine:
2006 IS250 AWD - SGM
60k miles
Lux package + extras
18" rims

- $16,000

The day I bought mine - glad I had the AWD

calvin said it...if you have a 350 before, you'll be disappointed if you get anything less.

Best advice I can give is be patient. I waited for 4-5 months looking, waiting, looking, and more waiting for the best deal. Though I had to fly into a different state and drive back in the car, it was well worth it. Got a '06 IS350 with <31k miles on the clock for $7k under KBB. Just my $.02
