Default Need Second Opinion on tires

Hello CL

Recently, not paying attention i was in the process of making a right turn and made it tooooo sharp and my back right wheel hit the curb (the type of curb with the steel edges and heard a loud noise.

Results: A minor slightly ripped sidewall and a tiny piece of chipped rim

I took my car to a specialty tire shop (Larkin bros. in San Francisco) and the guy just kept talking about how a new tire was needed . The tire is completely done

The tire shop couldnt get their hands on one saying the tire was special order (dunlop sport 2050) and said even though the curb/rim was only ripped , the tire is defected now completely and can explode

So i just ended up ordering a tire from lexus (300 bucks or so) and then I went today to get it put on and my dads friend which is the service advisor checked out the tire and said it was nothing. He said if it was his car he wouldn't even replace it since no metal was showing in the rip.. parts dept. ended up returning my money

I need a second opinion from CL since the parts advisor just glued the rip back to the tire

pics would help.

If no belts are visible from the impact dont worry too much about it until your tpms light turns on. if it affects your driving then i would change it.

You should be fine if it's a small superficial flap. I've had that. Especially if the service manager agreed and gave you his honest opinion. Bring it to BOS on the 26th of June and you can get 160 opinions on it....FREE!!!!

If a business told you it's ok then it probably is.everyone wants yo make money. The tire shop was probably just trying to cover there self bec damage to the sidewall is generally not safe

Using the tip of your pointer finger press on the remaining rubber behind the carnage. Does it feel solid still or soft, like you can "almost press through it"?

Similar happened to me. Brought to tire shop for warranty and they denied me telling me it's fine to roll on. So it should be ok.

I drove on a tire like that for a while with no issues, the previous owner did it and got some curb rash too.

Typical of a tire shop to try and sell you a new tire, and typical of them to not cover it under the tire warranty.

Not an area to take chances with.... Hit a corner at speed and have that section blow, you'll wish you had heeded common sense and not pinched a penny.

Replace it before it kills you or the family in the lane next to you....
Tires are cheap compared to life and limb.

I have the same thing happened to my tire and the cut was slightly deeper but smaller. I just bought perfect glue (type 1) and glued the loose piece back to the tire sidewall. I think any rubber to rubber glue will work (eg: rubber cement, gorrila glue, epoxy, etc).

I figure if there is a problem, i will see that the glue will fail to work and the cut would re-appear first and then I would change the tire before something happens but it has been holding strong for more than 1 year and still holding.

Hope that helps.
