Default Improving rough ride on 2011 IS 250?

Very glad to find this forum and hoping to tap the expertise of some fellow posters. First off, I'm coming out of a BMW so I was used to a firm ride.

But we picked up my new IS 250 on Monday and I am actually finding myself trying to steer around manhole covers rather than go over them at normal 25 mph speed. And I'm feeling practically every dip and seam in the highway.

Needless to say, did not experience that on our test drive. Thought I was crazy and had my husband drive the car - he noticed it even more than I did.

I called the dealership to find out what was different about the car we test drove vs. the one we ordered.

Assuming they say "nothing", what can I do to improve the ride quality? The car has 225/45R17 front and back.

If I replace the low profile tires would I be likely to have something more like the ride I had in my 328i?

Needless to say, telling my husband I apparently made a mistake and want to trade a three-day old car is not an option.

Thanks very much for any advice! I would really appreciate any help you can offer.

Kathy

I have the same problem when I'm on the freeway and I run over a pothole. I think it has to do with the sport suspension? Stiffer suspension means sportier? but you sacrifice comfort.

edit: Ok nvm. I thought you said potholes. Manholes....something must be wrong.

I just picked up a new 2011 IS 250 last Friday, and I can say mine rides as smooth as can be. I even have the AWD. Not sure what's up there with yours. My mother actually drives a 2010 BMW 328 and i'd say mine rides smoother than hers.

That's actually what I expected to have. I've left a message for the dealership to call me. Maybe there is something wrong with it since I don't have the F version (sporty).

I've had my IS 250 ( Non F Sport version ) with the 18" wheels/tires for more than 2 months now and it honestly is soooo smooth !!! Granted i will feel the bumps and thumps of the NY/NJ area potholes but that is to be expected

Bring it to the dealer and allow them to take a test ride it. I am sure they will try their best to fix what the issue may be ?!

Hmm, too bad about this initial experience. For me, it did take some time to get used to the low-profile tires. But certainly you should go back & for peace of mind take another test drive in a different car. Then go on the same route with your car. Good Luck !

Unlikely. Check your tire pressures, Kathy. 17s will ride much smoother than the 18s unless you have crappy tires (unlikely on a new car) or your tires are over-inflated. I moved from a BMW to an IS250 with 18s and didn't like the harsh ride. Bought some 17s and everything is fine now.

If you have 17" wheels on a new IS 250 you probably have the AWD which I find doesn't ride as smoothly as the RWD.

1. if your BMW didn't have sports pkg, it will be softer than IS250 with sports pkg
2. if your IS250 doesn't have sports pkg, than try different tire set up because stock tires on NON-AWD could be summer tire...and stock summer tires are harder than all season tires.

Mine came with summer tire, and after 20k miles, I switched to Hankook v4 all season.
V4 is a lot softer so it soaks up most of the cracks and bumps.
