Default Oil Filter Housing Question

Hey guys, need a little help here. I have a neighbor that has a 2008 Lexus IS 350. He asked me a very good question and after some searching online, I couldn't find the answer. He told me that on the oil filter housing there are two plugs on there. He was asking me what I thought they were for. My suggestion was the same as his speculation, which was that they could be for an optional oil cooler. I wanted to be sure if that's what they are for or if they could be for some other reason? I figured you guys would be the experts when it comes to these cars. Any ideas? Thanks in advance guys.

Plugs? On the removable oil canister, or on the part that the canister attaches too?

Hmmm I can't say that I've ever seen them. Guess I need to take a look next time I'm under there.

One is to drain the oil before opening the housing, but I thought you only need to open that hole on AWD vehicles because the housing points straight down.
