Buying Wrecked IS 350 from Insurance?
Hello,
My cousin has a a 2006 IS 350 that he recently got into a light head-on collision and he bought it back from the insurance company. The car is fully loaded with 97k miles. I want to buy it back from him. Here is my concern/question:
I believed there are a few safety recalls that haven't been taken care of.
1) Will the dealer still fix the recalls if it has been in accident?
2) @97k, what kind of service(s) do I need, assume he didn't do the 90k service. How much will that cost at a independent shop?
Safety recalls for this car based on the VIN number:
Safety Recall BLA Certain 2006 - 2007 GS, 2006 - early 2009 IS 250 and 2006 - early 2008 IS 350 vehicles Insufficient Tightening of the Fuel Pressure Sensor
Safety Recall ALG - Certain 2006 Model Year Lexus IS and GS Vehicles & Certain 2004 through 2006 Model Year RX Vehicles Brake Master Cylinder Cup Replacement
Safety Recall ALE - Certain Lexus GS 350, GS 450h, GS 460, IS 350, LS 460, LS 460 L, and LS 600h L Vehicles - Valve Spring
Safety Recall 9LG - Potential Floor Mat Interference with Accelerator Pedal

1. Depending on what damages the car had, will effect the recalls of course. If the collision didn't damage the brake cylinder then the recall should still apply.
2. To be safe, I would service everything. I bought a used car without checking the alignment. Burned through the tires to the wire.

Thanks Everyone.
This place is super helpful.
The damage was light. Replaced the bumper, head lights, the hood got bended a little so that was replaced as well, driver's airbag popped and will be replaced. That was about it. Does $12.5k sounds good? Car has been serviced by the dealer since 30k miles. Everything else is in great working condition.
Below are some pictures after fixed (not finalized yet, still need to adjust the front bumper cover)

Probably a good price and the car will serve you well. Doesn't appear to be "fully loaded" though. Seems to be missing parking assist, headlamp washers and doesn't look like it has PCS. But all in all, a nice car.

The 90k service BTW is just an oil and brake fluid change, so maybe $150 tops at a non-dealer shop... (oh, and changing the air and cabin filters, but you do those yourself, takes like 5 minutes)
At 100k you need the coolant changed, so might as well do that if it's at 97k and you're getting the other stuff done.... that'll be it apart from oil changes until you hit 120k (at which point you need to do the same stuff as at 90k, plus spark plugs)

Sounds like a GO.
Thanks to all.
I called my local lexus dealer to check on the safety recalls and Sffd103 was right. They told me to bring in the car and they will take care of all the services at the same time/day. I am so excited. Never had such a sporty and powerful car before :-)

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong, but to buy a car back from an insurance company, that means it had to have been declared a total loss, correct? That doesn't sound like a "light" head-on collision.
Also, some of those recalls are from years ago. I would be concerned about a car whose owner hadn't bothered to take it in for the recalls. It's one thing to forgo a TSIB here or there, but quite another to not take in your car for 4 separate safety-related recalls. It just doesn't inspire confidence that the owner took good care of the car.

I think it infact does go as a total loss but someone might correct us if were wrong, however what do u think is a good price Calvin ? Regardless of what's on paper doesn't make it a bad car, insurance makes anything over 10% of msrp in damage a total loss. Doesn't mean the car is a p.o.s. Also he mentioned the vehicle has been serviced every time since 30k miles.. If the dealership can stand by that then I am sure some missed recalls aren't going to make a Lexus a Honda. For 12.5 is a great deal, he could probably part it out and make more money than that.
