done the SD to bay area trip in my friend's IS250 before i got mine last year. Its really not that bad, in fact it was the most comfortable road trip i've ever had (the main reason why I bought a IS250) Use blue painter's tape if you don't have a clear bra on your car, there are tons of truck on highway 5 and rocks fly everywhere as well as tons of bugs!

This question makes my head hurt... How could mileage possibly be affected by towing?

Also, I don't see how towing could be cheaper than driving 500 miles. I say this is a no-brainer... Just drive. A one-time, 500-mile trip shouldn't be that bad.

Lol, 500 miles is nothing. I drive 740 miles round trip from Santa Barbara just to go to the Norcal bay area meets. I've already done it twice this summer.

Calculate and compare the cost of renting four-wheel trailer with the cost for gasoline.
Choose the cheaper one.
In case you choose to use a trailer, don't back up into a parking lot with the Four-Wheel trailer though. It's very difficult to manoeuvre the trailer as it will go the opposite direction i.e. You back up to the left the trailer will go to the right and vice versa.

Good note on Jadu's comment: Who will drive the U-Haul car for you if you are to drive your lexus?

Ok the consensus seems to be drive the car but from reading the responses, it seems like the part where I'm renting a uhaul to move my stuff is missed. Whether I drive it or not, I'm still renting a u-haul truck regardless. The only way I can drive it is if my friend comes with me and one of us drives the uhaul.. otherwise i'd have to fly back down to drive my car up on a separate trip if i don't tow it.

So it's either:
a) One person drive uhaul and one person drive my car at same time if my friend comes
b) drive uhaul and tow car if my friend doesn't come
c) drive uhaul up and then fly back down and drive my car up on separate trip.

Well, if you tow the car in neutral and your towing in a manner where all 4 wheels or just the rear wheels are down, it will still count the miles on the odometer. Pretty sure that's what he was asking about lol. That or he meant does it affect the gas mileage of the Uhaul, which it will lol.

Oh, haha, that makes a lot more sense. For some reason, I forgot about the possibility that a car could be rolling while it's towed. My mind was stuck inside the box thinking he would have it sitting on top of a trailer, so it's wheels wouldn't be touching the road.
