3) Reliable
4) Luxurious interior
5) Quiet ride
6) Exterior styling

I also wanted something I could take to the track and road course. The GSX makes too much power and has a crappy suspension geometry for this.
35-40 mpg? I'm trying to get 30 mpg by driving like an old man and still get 32 mpg MAX! My tank average is usually 26-27 only. Jeez.

The key to getting good gas mileage is to waste as little momentum as possible. That means coasting instead of braking. I do not recommend you do this unless you are very adept at reading traffic and can anticipate other drivers. I can tell you my mileage going to work in the mornings is a lot better than coming home in the afternoons due to stop and go freeway traffic when I'm heading home. Acceleration rates really don't matter, becuase whether you accel slowly or quickly, the mass of the object is the same, and you'll use about the same amount of fuel either way. The key is making it last.

I had a wonderful experience with the 2000 GS300 and sold it when I moved to Singapore in 2007. When I came back earlier this year I was debating between an IS250 and a BMW 325 Ci (convertible) foolishly I went for the cool factor and the "ultimate driving machine"...$4K of repair and maintenance later I sold it and bought the IS250 last month. Lesson learned, go with what you know.

I got offered a deal that I couldn't pass up for an IS250. I originally wanted an IS300.

Also, it's a damn good looking car. And it's a beautiful red, my favorite color. And it's manual.

It was between this IS250 and a 330i back when I was shopping for mine. 6-speed was a must. Between the two, the IS had a lot more value to it than the BMW. Less power, but way more of everything else. And I drive in the city, during rush hour around 85% of the time. Extra power doesn't help in gridlock. I have a motorbike for speed.

For me the was for looks and being comfortable only. The Lexus did this was better than the BMW. Better seats, better leather, better stereo, better fit and finish, better materials, and better reliability. Boom done.
