Hi how can you remove the differential from the car without pulling the axles from the hubs? I dropped the differential from its mounting points but could not get the axles out of the differential. Any help would be appreciated gt86 differential sitting on the bench waiting to go in! Thanks.

 

You won't be able to remove the diff from the carrier unless the half shafts are removed from the carrier as well. The stubs of the half shaft stick into the diff there.

 

If you drop the differential and twist it just so, from what I can recall, it is possible to get the axles out without disconnecting anything else. It is a big pain to attempt this. The better way to go if you don't want to remove the axles from the hubs, is to undo the lower control arm bolt, giving you room to move the knuckle outwards and get the inner to pop out from the differential case.

I'd imagine one could do just the one side if they wanted too.

Just remember to put the car back on all fours before tightening any rubber bushing pivot points or you'll destroy the bushing from over rotation once its back at normal ride height.

IS-F is the same install as the 350... A couple links w OS Giken LSD. They sorta went nuts pulling the axles but oh well. Its just nuts and bolts and likely went quickly on the lift. See pictures.

Pulling the axles is easy with an SST type tool as shown in the repair manual - it is OTC tool # 6541 / 519375 - can be used with regular slide hammer.

I was going to ask you about this when I saw your listing.
How's the top speed? Does it affect your MPH readings?

I'm planning to do this mod for my AWD this summer. Talking with Jeff he stated I shouldn't have problem dropping the 4.1 diff from a FRS/BRZ. Since my car is a 2010.

 

Top Speed? Not sure, but then again I never got around to tracking the car.
Speedometer readings (MPH)? I never noticed a difference.
MPG? ~ 1mpg (or could have been me just having more fun)

 

Doing this will not affect your speedometer readings.

Doing this in an AWD will have no effect on your gearing, as such it will have no effect on acceleration or top speed (beyond additional traction).

Thanks to Jeff for all the info. I done it too. Love to learn stuff, so I taken the long way. Funny I found an almost new differential from a scrap yard, case was immaculate, and was supposed to be LSD. Turn out it wasn't so I continued my search and found a rusty one. Taken the LSD unit bought the Immaculate one and install the LSD into it. Case, rack and pinion have been saved, put new bearing in, check the backlash and the wear pattern. Finally put a powdercoat on the cover. Enjoy.
