Talk to your employer and ask if they can cover the loss on your car (difference between what you paid and what you can sell it for). If they do, then head over to CarMax and be done with it. Then when you get back to LA in 2 years get the 3IS. But if your employer won't cover the loss, then you're going to have to make a tough decision.

i have the same problem. got a three year lease to relocate to miami, and ill probably be doing back to nyc with about 12 months left on the lease. having rwd in new york, plus $500/mo parking is absolutely not worth it.

you could either move to brooklyn, and pay <2000/mo in rent, and park on the street, or move to manhattan and pay 3000/mo in rent + 500/mo in parking. those are basically your two options if you keep the car. not to mention, you need to spend the $$ on shipping the car and re-registering, changing insurance, etc.

IMO, sell it. the loss you will take on the car is peanuts compared to the cost of living in nyc. this is probably the least of your financial worries.

oh, and just to share my story, in case it sheds any light...

i cannot wait to dump my lease. i thought it would be liberating to move out of nyc and have a car....but sky high insurance pmts, lease pmts, and premium fill-ups get old quick. i'll tell you what is liberating, keeping an unlimited metrocard in your wallet that could get you basically anywhere. its faster, cheaper, risk-free, and the best part - no planning when it comes to knocking back a couple.

even if someone offered to ship the car for free, i would still never consider bringing the car up to nyc. in fact, i would happily pay my last 12 months of lease payments just to have the car sit at a florida dealership, knowing that my means of transportation up in nyc would cost me almost nothing. no more insurance pmts, no more fill-ups.

nyc has some of the best public transportation in the nation, take advantage of it for the time you are there.

dang, it's not that bad... I like having my car in NYC. It was liberating to get rid of my old crapmobile moving to the city after college but I can see wanting to keep the is250 ya just bought. Flip a coin

40K for a 250? I paid 41 for a 350 brand new.. You might get 34k. So, just take the hit as part of the cost of doing business, and roll it in to your decision on whether to take the job. I can't imagine uprooting myself and moving 2200 miles across the country for ANY job though. Realize also that in NYC, you are going to need about twice as much money as pretty much anywhere else in the country. 100k job in NYC is like 50K job elsewhere because of the cost of living.

I would think you would be able to afford the car and spend a bit on parking (find a place to live with parking available). At least on weekends, you have a car to take off and explore....

And you will not have to sell at a loss now and then have to buy again in 2 yrs. If you figure the loss you take now, it may be worth it to pay to have the car in NY with you.

I lived in the Bronx as a kid and i remember it taking an hour to find parking on certain nights. If you sell the car your would loose loads of money and if you keep the car garaged you will loose even more. I would say your best option would be to find a place in north eastern nj bring your car and just commute to work using public transportation system. Paying for a car and not enjoying it is not an option. You will find plenty use for it here in jersey and will only be 15-30 minutes removed from NYC. Monthly NJ transit tickets are a lot less than parking in the city and you wont put many miles on the car. Plus you get more space in jersey and can drive into the city to show off the IS on weekends. You should seriously consider staying in NJ.

There plenty of ppl up in NELOC that can help you feel at home. Show you around town. If your car is RWD then I'd look into some really nice all season tires that are snow friendly.

you are going to take a dive on depreciation and demand--however the cost of insurance, maint and parking will outweigh that. I bought a car from new york, it had quite a bit of body issues on both bumpers and the fenders. I have two new bumpers now, but painful to watch slowly.

sell it--in today's economy can anyone afford to throw out cash for insurance and parking if you don't NEED it? save up for an IS-F
