I'm just wondering if it's really safe to change the oil more than 5k miles(we all know oil service lights up every 5k) especially like me that put a lot of miles. At the same time, I don't wanna have any problems later on as I'm planning on keeping my car til it stops running. TIA
On the contrary- if you are doing mostly longer highway trips you're the ideal candidate for longer oil changes, as that is the easiest type of driving on the engine/oil. You could easily do 1/yr changes with something like Amsoil, maybe 2/yr with Mobil 1 (though you'd want to change your filter every 7500-10k or so)

It's folks who do most of their driving by taking 5 minute trips, or sit idling in traffic all the time who might not want to run quite as long since that's much harder on oil.

I'm not saying fresh oil is a bad thing. I'm just trying to sift through the hearsay and scientific studies.

Of course they don't have proof...it ain't true They're stuck with 1950s thinking on motor oil.

Again- check out the UOA threads on here... you'll see car after car running 10k changes without any problems at all, and that's even on conventional oil in some cases.

With synthetic you're good for considerably longer (but we do see issues with folks who run the same filter upwards of 12-15k miles, hence why I suggest changing the filter every 10k max)

Not at all.

Why would you "flush" the engine?

The two oils are no only completely interchangeable, they even sell them pre-mixed. That's what "synthetic blends" are.

(mind you, I'm not a fan of those, as you pay near-synthetic prices, but lose much of the benefits of pure synthetic)

thanks good to know, i was always told that if you switch you should have the engine flushed to remove all the old minerals from mineral oil.

Thanks a lot Kurtz. From now on, I'll be doing my oil change every 10k miles (in my case that's 5months). BTW this might be a noob question, isn't the oil just gonna gush out if you remove the oil filter housing? I'm not planning on just changing the filter, I'm just wondering.

I'll probably get flamed for this but I use Walmart Supertech 5W20 oil ($11.94 for 5qt) and a Toyota OEM filter and drain plug gasket ($4.79 Sewell) every 5,000 miles. I did buy the Toyota filter wrench SST though ($51.06 Sewell). Makes it so much easier.

Nope, you'll only lose a small amount of oil changing the filter, so change it then top off the oil.

Nothing wrong with that, though you're likely still changing too often... unless you're doing severe duty driving even conventional oil has been shown to run 7500-10k miles cleanly in the 2IS. As always UOA is the best way to know for sure for your car and your driving conditions

That's what I'll use after my 5000 mile freebie dealer change and I thought 7500 mile changes with Amsoil 5w30 full synthetic was overkill but it would be about that mileage for a yearly change for me..

Yeah, 7500 is way way too few miles to change Amsoil for mileage (and 5000 is just insanely too often for that good an oil) but time-wise annual is about the longest you'll see car folks suggest.

There's some boat guys on BITOG who go more than a year on Amsoil (with relatively low miles on it obviously) and have good results... so it'd probably be ok to run to 2 years at 7500 a year, with maybe a 1/yr filter change... but as always UOA would be the only way to be sure.

If you want to stick with 1/yr at 7500 miles you could pretty safely go to a cheaper oil like Mobil 1 with no downside... hell, at only 7500 miles in a year you could go to conventional oil as far as oil life goes, but (assuming non-severe duty driving) you'd lose the general synthetic advantages (better cold flow, better low oil protection, etc)

You're probably right on the two years,Kurtz.
My IS is actually more of a pleasure vehicle so it may not even get that 7500 mile per.More like 5K or 6K but maybe a bit more.
I'm OCD and will change the oil once a year.Still may use Amsoil because a Amsoil dealer is a friend and I get it pretty cheap.I still have the 5K freebie change to go.
As you may have read I just bought my new '10 and it only had 95 miles on it in 18 months of lying around at the dealer and I just changed the oil & filter at 360 miles. It was driving me nuts.OCD is a terrible thing.

I absolutely agree that changing Amsoil at 5K miles is really a waste but it's up to the person and it's his $$$.

Hey Kurtz, I'm 100 miles from a Toyoty/Lexus dealer, Napa oil filters have a very good reputation, what do you think?
