Obviously unexpected things arise and some things can't be avoided, but if at all possible you should be buying your cars well before you're at a point where you have to jump on the next car you find. In doing so you immediately shift all your negotiating power over to the salesman.

An example of this was my dad. He had a 1999 LS400 with about 160k miles and really wanted an LS430, however his car was running fine, had no issues, and likely would have run for another 100k or more. So over time he would just periodically check the inventory on used LS430s in the area to see if there were any deals. One day we were driving by a small Toyota dealer's used lot and saw a white LS430, exactly what he was looking for. Turned out it had been sitting there for weeks and the dealer was just about to send it to auction the next day. My dad made a lowball offer (including his LS400 as a trade-in) and the dealer came down a bit but not much. My dad and I looked at each other, said thanks, and started to walk out. The salesman came strolling (briskly) after us and said he'd talk to his manager. Ten minutes later the car was bought for very close to the low offer my dad had given.

I had a similar experience when looking for my car. I found a 2008 with 12k miles but the tires where trashed and the dealer was refusing to put new tires on the car. After an hour they would not budge and I walked out and left my business card and told them if they wanted to take my offer to call me.

They did call me offer $200.00 bucks off but no new tires I said no thank and the sales guy had the nerve to tell me "I guess you can't afford the car".

I let him have it after he said those words to me, and the only reason why I did not speak to higher ups was because i was setteling on the interior color when I really wanted black interior.

Another base model, If you can get the car for that price after tax, tittle and what ever other fees it might be worth it. Also consider total interest paid into the total price.

Again, you need to check places like Autotrader and Cars.com to gauge how fair the pricing is. Personally that sounds a bit high, unless its certified. I saw 2009 and thought the price might be justified, then realized it's nearly out of factory warranty anyway.

If that was the car I wanted, the negotiation tactic I'd probably personally take is 1) ensure the car is perfect and free of any issues, otherwise make the dealership fix them all, 2) tell them I'd buy it for that price but Certified. Certifying costs about $1000 for the dealership, so it'd essentially be like asking them to knock off $1000 from the purchase price and CPO it.
