Actually sounds like a pretty good deal, based on the nationwide Autotrader search I just did. The best way to gauge whether a price is good is just to check Autotrader and Cars.com for comparable cars in your area. You won't be able to gauge well from the prices on cars others got (as will inevitably be posted here) since circumstances are always different.

Was really only able to find these 3 cars that looked like they might better that deal:

Start your search here: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...e-threads.html

EDIT: Didn't see it was a base model. Definitely too much for a completely base model. In addition to the fact that you'd be getting a car with no options/packages, keep in mind that buyers in the resale market (especially for 2009 model cars) will often just skip over base model cars. Nav is almost an expectation for such late model cars.

It sounds OK, but not good enough for a base model.

Too much for a mase model.

I just got my sister a 2008 IS250 with OEM HID,navi, wood trim, heated vented seats and 18" sport wheels for $25,500.00 after tax title and dealer fees.

Too much for a base model even for an 09. Also since your trading in, negotiate the price on the car itself first before even mentioning your trade in. I find it will save you a lot of $$ if you negotiate the cars price first, then negotiate how much they give you on the trade-in after the fact.

I did that to a couple of salesmen while looking for my sisters IS. It actually gets fun you should also say "I don't have to buy the car you on the other hand have to sell it" if you're not getting the price you want to pay for it.

You're exactly right, the power to walk away is the most important advantage you have in a negotiation, particular a car purchase. To capitalize on this, you should always try and time your car purchases in such a way that you never "need" a car desperately. Obviously unexpected things arise and some things can't be avoided, but if at all possible you should be buying your cars well before you're at a point where you have to jump on the next car you find. In doing so you immediately shift all your negotiating power over to the salesman.

An example of this was my dad. He had a 1999 LS400 with about 160k miles and really wanted an LS430, however his car was running fine, had no issues, and likely would have run for another 100k or more. So over time he would just periodically check the inventory on used LS430s in the area to see if there were any deals. One day we were driving by a small Toyota dealer's used lot and saw a white LS430, exactly what he was looking for. Turned out it had been sitting there for weeks and the dealer was just about to send it to auction the next day. My dad made a lowball offer (including his LS400 as a trade-in) and the dealer came down a bit but not much. My dad and I looked at each other, said thanks, and started to walk out. The salesman came strolling (briskly) after us and said he'd talk to his manager. Ten minutes later the car was bought for very close to the low offer my dad had given.

I have noticed the market prices for 2008 IS250 are dropping, as well as 2009 models.

lol. No, that's not a good deal. I was negotiating for a IS250 with nav and ~25k miles, and they go down to $26,500 pretty quick. And recently there's a quite a bit of used IS250 come on the market (at least in AZ).

Test drove my first 08' 350 a couple weeks ago with Nav at a lexus dealership. Very clean car and after the test drive I asked, okay so whats the price. $35K! I almost laughed out loud.

No joke

What is your definition of "base model?" The majority of people today misuse the term, "fully loaded" and the same thing happens with base models. Often, the car has a premium package, but because of no nav or smaller rims, it's called a base model. What does it have? IS's with a premium package and smaller rims are quite common here in Los Angeles, but they aren't considered strippers.
