Default Auto start anyone got it?

I live in this horrible place called Omaha Nebraska where it snows and gets cold enough to where you can throw a cup of water in the air and it turns to mist before it hits the ground. Does anyone have auto start in their cars? If so, what brand did you get? I want to see the reviews on this before i seriously buy this before the winter hits and pics if you got them, thanks.

Isn't there a thread on this and how difficult it's been and people paying close to $1,000 for their alarms installed?

there is a thread somewhere--the biggest negative is that you must have two key fobs, the DEI alarm one and the oem one. Also if you use the alarm, you must always open the door with the alarm fob, not oem fob. I don't use the alarm fuction at work and just use the remote start when it is freezing out.

The two FOBs is the pain. FYI I paid like 650 for mine. worth it in the winter here in colorado!

Couldn't you just get a key card and have it in your wallet so you only need to carry the dei fob in your pocket?

You can also get the smart start for your iPhone to start your car if you don't want two key fobs.

can you please further explain the iPhone start option? I've never heard of this, sounds sleek. I googled and searched the forum but couldn't find anything. I'm guess this option won't work on 2008 Is350, no ML?

fiif you are familar with installing alarms or remote starters then any lexus vehicle is not difficult at all and push to start vehicles are usually easier because the bypass data modules do all of the work. when i did my 08 lexus is250 i spent less than 2.5 hours total time installing a viper 5902 with smartstart. but im a pro at doing this type of work.

$1000 is way to expensive, a viper 5901 with flashlogic or idatalink bypass module would be and is a great unit, or autopage, python, clifford and going rate is $499-699 without smartstart and an additional $200 with smartstart depending on where you go. make sure the shop has good reviews and has been around for a while, stay clear of shops who want you to give up a 2nd key to leave under the dash in a hideaway box, thats a sign of no experience with todays advanced electronics.

if you just want remote start and keyless entry average price is 249.99 to 299.00 installed at most shops. i am quoting these prices by chicago area whom i have called in the past. suburbs and surrounding chicago areas charge more because they think people are richer and will pay it. i called a few shops in chicago and they wanted close to 800 for a viper 5901 installed without smartstart.

i did my own installation using a viper 5902 with idatalink bypass mnodule and smartstart and it all costed me around $500 plus yearly subscription fees. stay away from non brand name units, viper, python, autopage, clifford, hornet and any dei unit is a good product and i have never had any issues with them or installing them in any car that i have ever done.

prestige is so so because the remotes always loose programming and unit has to be reset very often. and the most important thing i suggust you do is to look under the dash when the installer thinks he is done and ask to see the wiring, if it is sloppy and looks like a mess and what i call spaghetti , ask for them to stop and just remove it and go somewhere else, you do not want that alarm brain falling down while you are driving! it can be very dangerous and can cause an accident.

a great and professional installation shoud consist of the following:

1. all wires soldered

2.all wires shold be wraped in black tape, routed and cut to exact length and wired tied properly along with existing vehicle harnesses.

3. the alarm or remote start unit itself should be properly mounted and completely out of sight and away from any moving parts under the dash such as brake/gas pedal and steering shaft.
you do not want to be able to see the unit under the dash at all! because if you can see it and get to it easily , so can a thief if he gets into your car. even if there is a plastic shileld under the dash the unit should still be hidden, thats not an excuse to do poor workmanship ans leave the unit vulnerable to being ripped out very easily be cause of a lazy hack installer.

4. the bypass module should be hidden very well and most definitely soldered 100% because if a wire comes loose off the transponder unit or start button, youy are gonna be stranded.

5.any real alarm shop should offer lifetime warranty on the installation and give it to you in writing if asked, spend your hard earned money wisely.

6. the reciever antenna should never be mounted on the upper most part of the windshiled if the is that bluish tint from the factory that prevents glare. that bluish metalic stuff inside the glass causes interference and greatly reduces range from the transmitter to reciever.

7. you should always have a tach wire connected to the engines ciol, or fuel injector. if you do not then in those cold mornings the car will not start the first time as it is supposed to, dont let the installer do the voltage sense or timer methods! those do not work correctly. some units will start the car and if the car doesnt start correctly the unit leaves the ignition circuit on , thus killing the battery. ( thats the cheap units).

im sure there is more i could say but i covered the most important parts i think.

your is 350 is not a complicated car to do any alarm or remote start on, and viper smartstart or and device like it will work on any car. the smartstart just plugs into the alarm/remote start unit with 2 wires to connect, power and ground and thats it. smartstart allows you endless range from anywhere in the us. so in other words you can be in flordia and your wife in chicago with your car and lets say she gets locked out of the car, well all you have to do is open the smartstart app in your phone and hit the unlock button and she gets in the car. now you can also lock, open trunk and start/stop the car anywhere in the us. also if you have an alarm it will send text alerts if alarm goes off and they also have the smrtstart with gps so you can track the movement of the vehicle anywhere and anytime. too bad they dont have a command that allows the car to be shut down if u get carjacked! but any good installer can arrange that to happen if you really wanted it to.
