Regular oil: Every 6 months or 5,000 whichever comes first
Synthetic oil: Every 12 months or 10,000 whichever comes first
That's a perfect consensus , my car used to be serviced every 5,000 Km until recently when I went in for my 30,000 Km service the service advisor told me that they used " Lexus Oil " so the next service would be at 40,000 Km. So I guess I now know what that " Lexus Oil " is
Newer cars require 5000 miles oil change intervals thanks to new engine designs and improvements. The manual on my IS250 calls for 1K for first oil change and then 5K intervals after the first one.
You can't go wrong following the manual...I change every 5K miles at a Toyota dealer near my house...they change the oil, top up all fluids, and put air in the tires... all for 40 bucks.

Yes , but my Lexus dealer advised to change oil next after 10,000 Km's which might be because of the use of synthetic oils or because most Germans car's have started changing their oils only after 10,000 Km's too.
As always, UOA is the only way to know if you're changing too often, or not often enough, for your car under your driving conditions... but that said, based on a ton of previous UOAs from various people my advice is:
Barring severe duty driving (lots of short trips where the engine never runs at operating temp, or a ton of idling) changing every 5k miles is simply too often, based on every used oil analysis I've ever seen on a 2IS, regardless of type of oil used.
7500-10k miles for conventional.... 12-15k miles for any decent synthetic (and probably longer with something like Amsoil)... though I'd probably change the filter halfway through on the synthetic fill... maybe as much as twice if I wanted to run Amsoil to 25k in a year.... (might get to avoid the syn filter change running to 12-15k if you get the synthetic media filter from TRD though, you'd need some UOA with it to try it out and I haven't seen any on that).
I usually change mines every 3-5K miles, but the stupid warning light turns on at 3K so I change it just so it can go away.
No, the light and persistent message on the display don't show up until 5K. From 4.5K to 5K, it displays a message for a few seconds after starting the car.
