Found these and I like the idea of the diffuser making them appear more like factory than the ultra bright spotlight LEDs. Anybody try them or know if they will fit (length wise)?

I didn't get the ones from V-Leds but got LEDs with the diffuser. It's not all that difference from the spotlight ones. It's basically a spotlight bulb with plastic on top. It doesn't make an intense stream of light like the spotlight type ones but through the map lights, they pretty much make a dot when you look up at it. SMD LEDs are best for the map lights.

I've tried these LEDs out before. They might be a slight improvement as far as dispersing the light, but I'm pretty sure you'll still get those same dots. They're a decent replacement though so why not.
