Default OEM Spoiler Installation- 3M tape troubles

Hey guys, I recently took the advice on several threads here and purchased double sided 3m molding tape from Auto zone and tried installing the spoiler and it did not stick. The adhesive was not as strong as I have read on these forums. Did I purchase the wrong 3m tape? or do I need to heat it before application? or do I need to get the 3M acrylic plus double sided tape? I would prefer not to drill into the trunk so any input on this would be appreciated thank you!

I have the spoiler from the factory but if i were to do an install,I'd go with below like I did on a BMW I owned.

3m adhesion promoter for better adhesion.

You need the grey double sided tape (with the red plastic backing). Not the white foamy looking one...

You could pick the 3M tape from your local Staples or Office Max. Make sure to get the one that says it holds up to 5lbs.

and Advance and other big auto part stores should have the 3M tape.Along with auto paint supply shops..Even Walmart may have the 3M tape.
I don't know about the 3M adhesive promoter.Probably a auto paint supply shop.
Like Giantsfan said,it's got to be the gray color.
I bought both at amazon.

The one I purchased says Vehicle Molding Tape and it is gray with red like you are saying. Although for some reason when I try to push the spoiler onto the trunk, it will not hold it starts peeling up on the edges and it is definitely not on there strong. I am going to try and use an alcohol swab which I am assuming is not harmful to the paint? and heating the tape a little bit before application. Maybe I'll try and stopby autozone and try to pick up some of that auto acrylic plus and adhesion stuff.

is it cold out there. The weather may affect its adhesive abilities. This is EXACTLY why I don't like double sided tape!! Epoxy that thing on there!

make sure the surface is clean before you apply the tape, I've used the 3M tape on both my roof and trunk spoiler and its been sturdy and strong thus far had it on for about 2 1/2 years now.

Make sure your applying the tape when the trunk is at least warm, don't do in the cold. Make sure the surface on the spoiler and on your trunk is clean and then it should go on without any issues. You can use the optional 3M Adhesive Promoter if you want a better stick as well. It should not budge at all once you press it on though.

i agree, 3m tape will work fine. i also have installed a rear trunk and glass spoiler using 3m tape. i always heat the surface of the car and heat the tape untill it starts to bubble a tiny bit, i did my trunk spoiler and glass spoller the first time without adhesion promoter and they both came a bit loose on the ends, so i took them off and re taped them and applied adhesion promoter first then heated them and now they are on soo tight and has not even came a bit loose!!!!! yet that is , had em on for 1 year after reinstall

Is one package of promoter enough? From reading the directions they recommend only putting on area that will have tape on it, while an obvious state, ment to ensure you don't waste or use incorrectly, will this harm the finish?

One packet should be enough buy get two just in case..
Doesn't hurt paint and any excess is easily removed with alcohol if need be.

Default Success!!

Alright so I went and purchased Adhesion Promoter and decided not to use it haha. After reading the back of it I didnt want to permanently damage the paint on the trunk although it is hidden under the spoiler. Instead I used the alcohol wipe like you guys mentioned and used a blow dryer to heat up the 3m tape on the spoiler prior to installation. That helped big time, the adhesive was much more willing to stay onto the trunk and didnt flare out or loosen. I used tape to hold the spoiler onto the car for a couple hours. Let's see how this holds up with weather over the next few months, if it doesnt hold I'm just going to drill the holes into the trunk and do it OEM way next time.
