"is the lexus worth the tight pockets?
what do you guys think?"

That statement alone leads me to believe they are better off with a Civic. Perhaps a Lexus later on in life, but not now. Your best bet OP is to contact your insurance company and get a quote on both cars. Factor in the maint costs, fuel, etc and then you'll have a better idea.

if nothing is mechanically wrong with the IS then I would take the IS even over a new civic if you were going that route. On the highway I average about 26-27 mpg or better sometimes, in the city i get about 20 which all in all isnt bad.

If your plan is to buy the IS or a new civic, then I can tell you that you won't regret getting the lexus. As for insurance, I paid about 1200 a year, until my dad got into 2 accidents (his car not mine).

Civic:
1. ~30% cheaper on gas (better mpg + regular gas)
2. feels roomier (more room for the rear seats)
3. enough hp for your daily commute in traffic
4. cheaper insurance (mine went up from 25% with the IS)
5. cheaper maintenance

Lexus:
1. rides super smooth and quiet
2. did I mention how quiet is it compared to a civic?
3. way better stock speakers
4. I'm loving the heater seats
5. I've loving the extra HP
6. on my last ski trip, AWD made a HUGE difference in the snow/ice and hills
7. lexus dealership service is awesome, they are super accommodating and gives you free car washes, loaners and other perks.

The civic is a nice reliable car, but the IS is that and much more. When I first tried out the IS, I immediately noticed the difference in build and quality. Doing 90 on a IS feels like 40 on a civic. The upgrade was well worth the $$ for me
Couldn't have summed it up any better! I came from a 08 Subaru, and the difference really is might and day. If your not ready for the maintenance of keeping up a luxury car, whether it be keeping it clean or the cost of the few trips to dealership... Than get the civic. I gotta say I've never been more pleased in a car, I get a smile every time I walk out to drive it. Good luck

Have you test driven both yet? If you test drove the Lexus already, dont bother with the civic. You will not regret getting into a Lexus.

You comparing Civic with 2IS ?? this is completely different cars.
If money is the issue for you and you just need a car to get from point A to point B then go with Civic. If you want luxury, comfort, and prestige go with 2IS. Of course 2IS will be more expensive to maintain: gas, tires, etc.
I came from a Civic and i am never going back unless i can't afford Lexus anymore
And it was weird because insurance rates didn't change going from 120hp Civic to 306hp Lexus.

The insurance cost difference between my 2003 S2000 and my 2003 SC430 was a $5/month increase.
