Default New Purchase in Windsor, On

Hey All,

I just picked up a 2009 Is250 6 speed manual which I'm loving, big time!! I have a few concerns though that I didn't notice while test driving which I'm hoping aren't serious. Mainly, the tranny is pretty loud in first and second and also while sitting in neutral (but only when the clutch pedal is released). Third gear through sixth is flawless. I bought the car with 52K kilometers and the only thing I can think of is it could go in for tranny fluid flush which I did on my old civ after about the same mileage and it helped a lot. Hopefully, the previous owner didn't crank out the synchs on my first two gears. Also, the car still pulls hard in the first two gears, it's just they are kind of noisy..

I'll post some pics soon.

Thanks

Don't think changing the fluid would do anything. Did you get a warranty?

I know I get clutch chatter in first gear, been that way since I bought the car used but seems like thats normal for this car.

I hear the 6 speed manual is kind of rough on the 2IS because its borrowed from the Tundra. Maybe that's part of the reason why its kind of rough or noisy to you?

Either way, welcome to CL!

A similar design is used in the Tacoma/FJ Cruiser/older Tundra, along with a few other cars like the Camaro and Cadillac CTS, and almost identical to the RA63 unit used in the IS200/220d. While the basic design of the gears and shift forks are the same between all of these cars, other design elements such as the clutch and shifter are very different.

That being said, most of what makes the IS250 6MT setup noisy is the release bearing setup and the pull-type clutch, which trucks like the Tacoma do not use, so the same noise is not typically heard in those applications. The noise heard when the transmission is in neutral and the clutch pedal is released is normal and is there from day one, provided it's not more than that (squeaking/excessive grinding). I'd be more concerned about noise heard while gears are actually engaged (such as 1st and 2nd). That isn't very normal.

Toyota/Aisin did make several changes and improvements over the years, including improved synchros and a shifting mechanism counter-weight, these culminated in a TSB released last summer to replace RA62 transmissions with clutch noises. Powertrain warranty is for 6 years/110,000km so I'd look into whatever issues you're having right now, provided you are not past the in-service date on the car.

That being said, I just checked and I no longer see that TSB listed in the Canadian system. That is unusual, and I never had mine done. I wonder what's happening with it.

Jeff

Thanks for the welcome and the input! Going to do some research on the RA62's and the TSB list and bring her in for a check. Pics are coming right after a wash because this pearl gets filthy after a ride down the street lol

Welcome to CL...I have a 6 speed manual and it's definitely not the smoothest but it is what it is.
