Relatively speaking, why is the IS 250 so slow?

talk to lexus. maybe get into some sort of micro-lease with a future upgrade to a new gen 250. getting a lexus that looks like the same ones that came out in 2005 seems pointless.

I'm fairly certain insurance for the BMW will be higher than for the Lexus. My rates dropped drastically when I switched from a Mercedes to a Lexus. I assume Mercedes rates are similar to BMW

I get like 27 on highway in my IS350 cruising at 75-80. o____o
I guess I was in a similar situation, cept with the 335i and the IS350, but I just couldn't justify the maintenance of a 335i (since I've had two friends with them have their turbo blow on them the second warranty was over, and it cost a pretty penny to fix). My friends just complain about their bimmers. LOL. They spend money on maint, I spend money on mods. Just my 2 cents.

You're comparing brand new tech (328i) to 6.5-year-old tech (ISx50). That, plus, as others have said, a turbo'd I4 will generally give better fuel economy than a similarly rated NA V6.
But yeah, a lot of new powertrains these days are pretty impressive. The 328i is just one such example. I'm pretty hopeful for what Lexus will give us in the next gen IS.
Why are you comparing the 350 to the 328i? You realize the OP is asking about the 250, right?
And if you're going to compare to the 350, you have to take into account that the 350 is faster.

The OP specifically brought up the subject of gas mileage as a point of contention for the IS350 vs. 328i debate and made a potentially exaggerated "cost of ownership" claim. I posted the numbers in defense of the IS350.

Not trying to bash the car or anything, I am quite interested in buying one (right now I'm deciding between the 2012 328i and IS 250)

The 350 is still cheaper than the 328, and far quicker.... the 250 is thousands less than the 350 on top of that.
I can't figure out why anyone ever buys a BMW with what they charge.... that doesn't even get into the 80s-fabulous sparse interiors compared to a Lexus, or the much inferior reliability BMW gives you either.
syzygy already proved that you're looking at maybe a $300ish a year fuel premium for the IS350 vs the 328 if you drive anywhere near an average persons miles, so pretty small premium to have a much faster, much nicer, and much more reliable car
And as mentioned your premise is a bit unfair too since you're comparing the new for 2012 BMW to the new for 2005 ISx50.

328i still seems like the better deal since the 6 years you finance for the body will still be relevant. You get the ISx50 now and you will be cringing in envy every time you see a 2013+ model.

Most people bash the BMW's interior but i happen to think its the Apple co of interiors. Simplistic yet beautiful in design. The lines are impressive. Not to say that my oppinion is any more important but i study industrial design.

OP's comparison is off base. i assume he was talking about the F30 328i. well, that's a brand new motor and a turbo i4. the MPG of the E90/E92 328 is on par or maybe worse than IS250. but i do agree IS250 is too slow even with the v6, it feels slow off the line compare to a four banger TSX, but i think i'm used to it now, i think.

i used to have both 07 is250 and 09 328i with V6 3.0 engine i didn't see big difference in mpg it's about the same, but i loved bmw never gave me a problem and it was much faster, fun to drive than slow a** is250. no offense this is just my personal opinion.

I have to agree that the 250 is pretty slow, especially when you are trying to accelerate. Now you should get an Audi TT!!

If you can't wait until 3IS comes out i would go with BMW.
I sat in those new bimmers during Chicago auto show and the new interior is a big step up from previous generations. Very nice, luxurious and good quality. I liked it better than our 2IS interior.

Lexus Test Driver
1) 3-series is all new. That means the newest and latest technology and fuel economy. IS is old and on 2005 technology. Pretty basic and ends at that.
2) New 3 was just downrated a few mpg's. They overshot their wad.
Both are nice rides. You can't go wrong with either.

I will never get a 328 but the new 328 is pretty damn appealing for a entry level sedan. 240 HP turbo charged. It is going to be a beast in a few years.
If we compare bone stock MSRP vs MSRP they are practically the same price. The IS250 MSRP @ 34,470 and 328 MSRP @ 34,900. 250 invoice @ 32,623 and 328 invoice @ 32,290.
