Default DIY: Cluster removal for blinking AFS. Exclusive for 2011 / 2012 LED headlamp owners

I've searched via google for a DIY specific to cluster removal for the blinking AFS without any success.

I figured I would prepare myself while waiting for my new pair of LED headlamps and take the plunge with this DIY.

Step 1: Prepare the following tools

Size: 209.1 KB

Step 2:
Gently pry apart the side panel. There should be 3 clips that secure it in place

Size: 110.6 KB

Step 3:
Gently pry apart the following panel

Size: 117.8 KB

Step 4:
Using a phillips head screwdriver, un-screw the 2 screws (1 on each side beside steering column) to which hold the cluster in place

Size: 74.4 KB

Step 5:
Using a phillips head stubby screwdriver, un-screw the 2 screws located on top of the black cluster frame

Size: 66.6 KB

Step 6:
Gently pry apart black cluster frame surrounding the cluster. Once you're able to get a grip, pull out gently with your fingers

Size: 122.4 KB

Step 7:
This is an opportunity to clean that hard to reach area. Use a damp cloth

Size: 87.4 KB
Name: IMG_05101.jpg
Views: 335
Size: 160.7 KB
Name: IMG_05111.jpg
Views: 324
Size: 87.6 KB

Step 8:
Remove cluster lens. There are 6 tabs that secure it in place 2 on top, 2 top corners and 2 on each bottom corner. Locate these tabs and pull apart gently.

Size: 117.0 KB
Clean the cluster lens
Name: IMG_05051.jpg
Views: 374
Size: 137.8 KB

Step 9:
Cut a 1mm square piece of electrical tape and cover the blinking AFS. Be very careful as the cluster easily scratches / smudges
Name: IMG_05071.jpg
Views: 901
Size: 96.9 KB

OPTION 2: Remove cluster and lens, unplug 2 wires and tape or remove led for AFS as shown
Name: IMG_05211.jpg
Views: 336
Size: 50.4 KB
Name: IMG_05221.jpg
Views: 317
Size: 62.2 KB
Name: IMG_05241.jpg
Views: 322
Size: 100.9 KB
Name: IMG_05251.jpg
Views: 396
Size: 116.7 KB

Step 10:
Piece everything back together. The most difficult part of this DIY is putting the lens back onto the cluster. Please be very careful not to scratch or break any tabs

Name: IMG_05131.jpg
Views: 309
Size: 68.8 KB
Name: IMG_05141.jpg
Views: 392
Size: 135.0 KB

Name: IMG_05161.jpg
Views: 358
Size: 90.9 KB

I hope this DIY answers all the questions that have been rattling in the heads of the new owners of the 2011 / 2012 LED headlamps. Enjoy!!!

Please note: I take no responsibility for damages to your vehicle as a result of this DIY...Good Luck!

Couldnt you just remove the cluster and remove the light bulb that illuminates the afs light? Black electrical tape seems ghetto

thanks for the great DIY cluster remove thing, but I think it is easy way just remove the afs fuse below the driver knee I know if remove the afs fuse is will stop the auto level function too, but I don't care about that auto level thing, so many car out there has HID light without auto level or AFS thing, this way is the easiest way to remove the blinking light

Where are you going to go to get the DRL turned off?

Thanks. Again it's based on personal preference. I personally like my auto-level

Your post didn't show up on google search . With regards to the DRL's..I was planning to just unplug them as I currently have LED DRL's in there already anyway (no high beam). The bi-xenon and soon to be retro-fitted fogs will provided more than enough vision when driving up north to cottage country.

However, I know someone that will most likely disable the DRL for me If I choose to go that route. I will keep you in the loop.

Nice thread....

I'm just wondering....

Why didn't you remove the full gauge cluster and then place the black tape on the back side of the flashing icon...??

You went through 95% of removing the parts to remove the cluster and lense..

All you had to do was fully remove the cluster from car, remove lense, detach gauge cluster & black backing plate and finally place black tape on the other side..
(either over the icon image or over the led)

Your way works fine, but you can still see the Black Tape..

Just my .02 cents...

Hi,

How did you put those vinyl stickers in the audio control? Did you remove the air bag? Thanks

took the words right out of my mouth. I did this a year ago when I first got my headlights. I blocked the circular housing on the face plate where the light emits, rather than blocking the led itself.

Note: if you remove the led, half of those leds will not turn on as they are all daisy chained together.

Just wanted to say thanks to the OP for this informative post. I just installed my 2012 headlights, so getting to the cluster to cover the blinking AFS light was a must
