(The GTO is based on the Holden Monaro, which is the 2 door version of the Holden Commodore... the G8 is based on the Holden Commodore with numerous upgrades compared to the GTO)
The G8 GXP in particular gives you the LS3 instead of the LS2 in the GTO, offers a 6 speed auto rather than the 4 speed in the GTO, lot more trunk room, and a much nicer interior.
The GTO badge certainly has history, but I don't know that I'd buy a car that's a step backward in several major ways (and forward in none) because of the badge....
I say that as someone whose first car was virtually a GTO (1973 LeMans Sport Coupe, same car but one trim level down from the GTO that year- 350 V8 instead of the 400 V8 being the big difference)
I mean, get whatcha want, but I'd at least find a nice G8 GXP to test drive before buying anything.
