Default 2008 IS 250 RWD Engine Noise - Video

Hey all,

I just bought this car CPO about 2 months ago and I've noticed an engine noise, prior to the engine fully heating up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHCMI...ature=youtu.be

It's more prevalent at the beginning. The dealer said it was normal when I took it in to have it looked at. Thoughts? I'm making sure to put Shell 91 into it, so I don't think it's a knock.

You have to turn it up a lot (the video and your speakers) to hear it. Sorry about that.

Turn up your speakers/windows volume. The engine noise during acceleration seems to have a sort of rattle to it. It's really audible at the beginning of the clip.

I hear it... sounds almost like a diesel for the first few seconds.

I can tell you that my car does NOT make that noise. The valve tapping is noisy, but completely different sound.

EDIT - Have you/dealership checked heat shields for vibration. I had a similar issue on a previous car I owned.

They looked at it and said it was some sort of air pressure thing that was normal. Where is the heat shield located on the car? Would it be something that I could check?

I haven't checked specifically on this car, but there are quite a few of them beneath the car, and around the hot parts of the engine. I suppose you could check by hand to see if any are loose (after the car has cooled, obviously).

On the car I had this issue with, I was able to narrow it down to a general area, and the dealership found the defective heat-shield. I say defective because they tightened it first, and the problem continued. They ended up ordering a new heat-shield, and that took care of it. The sound was a little different than what I'm hearing in the video. Mine definitely didn't sound like a rattle though, and would change pitch when I revved. It would last for 10-15 seconds at start-up, then disappear.

Might be worth asking about. Good Luck!

Also, it really sounds like it's coming from the engine, not the rear of the car. Isn't the heat shield at the rear?

They are beneath the engine, around the cat, etc...

The offender on my car was a heat-shield just behind the front bumper, before of the front axle. Had to remove a plastic under-tray to gain access. This was not a Lexus though, so location is just a reference.

I was surprised when the dealership blamed the heat-shield, too. I thought they were full of it until they ordered the replacement, and viola all gone.

Interesting, I'll have to give it a try. I think I'm going to take it to a different lexus dealership though (different than the one that I bought it from). They were really sure that the noise was normal.

The only concern I have is that the car is CPO and CPO doesn't cover rattles. If i bring it in and just say I'm worried that it's knocking that should cover me to at least get the diagnostic fee waived right?
