2008 Audi S4 vs. 2IS 350
Was thinking of adding a 2008 Audi S4 to the family. Wanted to see if anyone here have an S4 and if it's a good car?
And reliability issues? Known issues? Recalls? How long and how many miles can I drive the car till I encounter mechanical issues (for example, in general, how many miles on the S4 before one would consider getting rid of it and getting some new and avoid costly mechanical repairs?)
The car has 57,000 miles.
Thanks.

I had an S4 before my Lexus. I really enjoyed the Audi, but repair and maintenance expenses became intolerable once the warranty was up. Oddly enough, the car was actually pretty reliable for the first three or four years.

Timing chain self-destructs right about 9x,000 miles. Bad guides.
To replace (as a precautionary measure) requires removal of the engine, as the timing gear is on the firewall side of the motor.
Fail to replace the guides and chain = catastrophic engine failure. It's an interference engine, so if timing goes awry, you're smashing valves and pistons in no time.
I was actually told to keep money in the bank for a replacement engine.

The funny thing about BMWs, Mercedes, and Audi is that when you look at the used market you can easily tell what each manufacturer's factory warranty period is. You're looking at a 4-year-old Audi with 57k miles. Well look at that - Audi's factory warranty is 4 years/50k miles.
This isn't a coincidence. No one wants to own German cars after the warranty period. That's why you see a glut of 4 year old cars with 50-60k miles on them on the used market.
I looked at Audis, specifically the S4 and RS6, when I was shopping for the car I had before my IS350. I was considering the RS/S Audis, M BMWs, and AMGs. Ultimately went with an E55 AMG. I should have known better, and it racked up $15k in repair bills in 6 months. When I was shopping the cars, I looked up the TSBs and recall lists for each car, and the RS and S Audis were just pages and pages long. The Quattro suspension system is a particular weak point. My friend has a 2007 A4 and he's replaced countless suspension components and is very unhappy with how expensive the car's been to keep on the road.
I'm not sure if this comparison is relevant to you, but it may be to others.
2008 Audi S4
- 340 HP/302 ft-lbs
- 3,990 lbs
- 13/20 MPG
- 0-60 in 5.3/5.7 (manual/auto)
- Edmunds used value of $27,254
2008 Lexus IS350
- 306 HP/277 ft-lbs
- 3,527 lbs
- 18/25 MPG
- 0-60 in 4.9 seconds
- Edmunds used value of $22,580
So you're paying $5,000 more for a car that's 400 pounds heavier, gets 5 MPG less, is slower regardless of transmission by at least 0.4 seconds to 60, and is far less reliable and more costly to maintain? Where's the comparison?
