1984 Toyota Cressida to 2012 Lexus IS250
Yup, i still drive a 1984 toyota cressida. my parents just bought me a 2012 is250 f sport for my graduation present. been lurking on the forum since i heard of the news. but anyways, does anyone have any tips on getting the car from norcal to socal (450ish miles)? people tell me to keep the revs low and vary the speed. some say to drive it hard and fast to seat the pistons (m3 technicians say this too). i honestly dont know whether its a good idea to drive that many miles when it only has like 15 total mileage.

I put like 600 miles (1000 km) on my first week end as it was a long week end, and couldn't resist a road trip. Drive at or just 5-10 miles above speed limit, don't over rev and don't floor it.
This is not so much for the engine, but for all other components, nothing sxcks more than finding out there was an assembly problem at just the moment you need it the most, and the harder you drive it, the more likely that moment is about to be.

There are those that say there is no need for a break in period on a modern engine, and you should drive it normally. So we get to decide who we want to believe. Is there a downside to running a break in procedure if it isn't required? How about if it IS required and not followed?

It's a new car that has warranty...drive her how u want and if it feels weird being it in....me personally would drive it a various speeds to feel out everything, idling, engine revs and misfires....quick acceleration, slow acceleration, lane change quickness...the whole works..

Breaking in your new Lexus.
To extend the life of the vehicle, the following precautions are recommended to observe.
For the first 186 miles (300km) avoid sudden stops.
For the first 621 miles (1000km) Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
Avoid sudden acceleration.
Do not drive continuously in the low gears.
Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.

Congrats! Buy some painters tape and tape the heck out of your front end if your not gonna get a clear bra before driving it down! I know there are TONS of bugs and rocks on the way down to socal.

Like I said, there are lots of pretty smart people that say no break in is necessary. Work out a good compromise. Maybe get your parents to put some miles and a couple of heat cycles on it before the trip, And don't forget to change the oil and filter when you get there.

Take afew days off and drive and explorer around norcal to socal. Sight see. Make it an experience of a life time with your buddies. Break in your car and spend times with close friends to sight see our just eat around. Win win.

The motor needs to maintain a load, whether under accel or decel. Traveling at a constant HWY speed is not good on a new motor. But after 30 miles I'd say if broken in properly, you should be good. Pick up the car from the dealership, drive around the city doing WOT pulls to the speed limit and decel under vacuum. I didn't see in the thread if you had said this was an auto or manual; it would be much easier if it was a manual though.
