AC Compressor Blew at WOT

AC Compressor Blew at WOT
I haven't been as active as I used to be, I also tried a search, found nothing.
Last Sunday night I went WOT thru a few gears while leaving friends business in a deserted industrial area. As soon as I let off the throttle, something didn't feel right, and sure enough "CHECK AIR CONDITIONING" appeared on my NAV screen. No CEL. Then the engine shut off. I then turned off the AC before restarting the engine. Engine started up fine, drove fine, until I turned on the AC again. As soon as it kicked in, the engine shut off again. Compressor is shot.
Looking for technical/mechanical reasoning from the Lobux's and kurtz's of the forum to why this could have happened. I'm having the compressor replaced along with supporting components, and want to make sure it doesn't happen again. I know that at WOT, and at a certain RPM, the ac compressor shuts off to (for lack of a better term) protect itself.
I'm guessing mine did not auto shut off.
Any ideas?
