Default Occasional sputtering

Hello all,

I've had this problem with sputtering for quite some time and was wondering if anyone had any ideas. It usually lasts for the duration of a trip and I've noticed it often starts up after driving on the highway for a while when the engine is warm. It is the worst when starting up from a full stop, it's also quite noticeable in second gear and not so much from then on but always at low RPMs. Once I'm at mid-range and up it's fine and it never happens at idle or at steady cruising speed. I've talked to a few mechanics about it but of course this being an occasional problem it didn't happen at the time.

Any input would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Dan

I have this occasionally as well, but only when coming to a stop or accelerating from a stop. Of course the dealership could not replicate it. I have a feeling it has to do with the quality of the gasoline.

If you're driving an IS250 the carbon build-up is most likely the cause of your problem...

Check out the Offical Carbon Build Up Thread for more information.

I have the same issue along with many other IS250 owners...

So this is a common problem?.. This car gets more disappointing every year.

Is there anything I can do about it for a reasonable cost considering my car is no longer under warranty?

If you own a 250 then a top engine flush was done to mine after it sputtered and shut of on me after a stop light. How many miles on your car?

Yes, it's a very common issue with the 250.

You can get a top engine clean done to help keep the issue at bay if you are outside of warranty. Also, you may want to call Lexus corporate and see if they are willing to do this for you out of good will.

After reading more about the carbon buildup issue I'm wondering if maybe I miss-used the word "sputter". What I meant was I'll step on the gas while releasing the clutch and instead of the car moving smoothly forward it's like the clutch has trouble catching onto the gear and I have to give it an excessive amount of gas to get it going. I've driven manuals before so I seriously doubt it's my technique.

The people with the carbon buildup problem report varying RPMs, shaking at idle and the engine almost stopping which doesn't sound like at all what I'm experiencing.

Any other thoughts with my new explanation in mind?
