Default Should an IS 220d (2006) REALLY need catalytic converter changed at just 50k miles?!

Hey there.
Hoping someone can answer me this wee question. Sorry I need to give a little background though. I have a 2nd hand IS 220d, 2006. Bought 5 months ago from a dealer (not Lexus, just general 2nd hand dealer). It died recently on the motorway, went into limp home mode. Check VSC, engine management light on.

Series of events:
1. Towed to dealer. Battery went dead and they couldn't charge it. So replaced battery as they thought that could have been the problem. Got 2 miles down road, and it did same thing - not surprisingly. Had my doubts that was going to solve it
2. They then referred it to Lexus garage. They advised EGR valve faulty and replaced it. I've read up about them being a common issue with these more modern diesels and being related to the Check VSC warning (not just Lexus even), so fair enough agreed that was probably the issue. After replacing though. they can't get it to regenerate, and now say it's catalytic converter problem, and want to replace that.

My question is that at just 50k miles, is that really a common fault (the catalytic converter issue), or could I reasonably assume that under the Sale of Goods act, it wasn't fit for purpose and of suitable quality (due to a fault there at the time of buying), and can ask them to cover the cost as that shouldn't really happen at such a relatively low mileage of just 50k miles? I'm told this could be a costly one.

Thanks in advance.

Cats are under warranty until 70k miles from Lexus i believe!

Page 23. 8 years/80k miles. For 2011 at least. 2006 should be similar

Sounds like your mechanic is a parts slapper, I would take the car to a knowledgeable mechanic one that will test the parts we wants to replace.

I do not have experience with lexus diesel, but I do have experience with diesel trucks. When it dies out, how does it die out? Is it bucking or power is just lost immediately? Diesels once heated should run non-stop aslong as the fuel pump and fuel pressure is there. I would check the fuel system for possible leaks

Thanks Guys. Useful to know about the warranty! Would I be covered by the manufacturers warranty, even though I bought it second hand from a different dealer?

ibidu1 - it just loses power altogether. No bucking or anything. Just no power to accelerate at all.

8 years, 80,000 miles is the US federal emissions warranty... it would apply to the car regardless of # of owners.. but not to someone outside the US.

You can certainly check your manual and see if there's anything like it in the UK though
