Just bought my car and the dealer told me that the car's oil last 10,000 miles on synthetic? curious about this... should i change my oil every 10,000 or at 6k on synthetic?

Yes, you can actually go as far as 15k miles if you change the filter sooner.

Personally I change mine every 5k miles. 10k miles is a bit too long IMO

Even at 3k miles the oil is super dark.

Color isn't indicative at all. There are many threads on this subject. Normal dino oil will go longer than 5k miles, and synthetic will go for 10+. A 5 or 10k change depending on the type is very safe.

i ran 11k with mobile 1. I sent a sample in for analysis and blackstone says it still good.

You are probably safe at 10k intervals. Only way to know for sure is to have an oil analysis done. Personally I do 5k changes on mine.

Every used oil analysis I've ever seen on a 2Is said it was fine at 10,000 miles even on regular oil, let alone synthetic... so anything more often, barring abusive driving conditions, is likely pouring money down a drain (almost literally).


As always the best way to know for sure on YOUR car in YOUR conditions is UOA, but there's a fair number posted by now so it's fairly safe advice that 10k on synthetic (or even dino) is more than fine for most drivers.

I personally change mine at 5K also just for piece of mind but I heard you can go 10K+ but change filter at 7K....imo if your going to change the filter you might as well change the oil too

I change my oil every 5k with Mobil 1 5w20 synthetic. Overkill? Probably. But it'll be a good selling point when I try to sell my car.
