Default brake wear.... got a question about pads

Had the brakes inspected today and the fronts are at 9mm. Rears are at 8mm. Sorry for the dumb question, but what exactly does this mean as far as wear go?

Pads are anywhere from 10-11mm new. So, you're in good shape.

Dang, that's surprising. I'm approaching 26k miles.

Typically closer to 2mm. But it always depends on rotor condition, etc.. Rotors can develop high edges or lips.. causing the backing plate of the pad to actually touch the rotor prior to there actually being 2mm of pad remaining.

For the record, I manually shift to all my stops. Might have something to do with this excellent wear.

^Driving style does have alot to do with it. So you help the foot braking with exhaust braking using down-shifting. I've thought about this before, and its really brings up a valid point. Would you rather have increased wear on the clutch or the brake pads? Just something to think about.

Definitely a good point and worth a lot of thought. One thing I do avoid is downshifting into first (with the auto trans). That's where a lot of strain can be created. Overally, I keep the rmps down throughout the shift range, which I believe prevents less strain on everything.

^Yeah don't downshift into 1st. Anything else is all good.

I use my foot on the brake and "S" mode downshifting together. So it's less strain all around

Oh, I assumed you had a manual trans. Oh well, same goes the auto trans.

in light of dumb questions--when my breaks start to give off a high pitched squeal when applied at low speeds or reversing.....time to change them out?

how much does it cost to get them inspected?

You are more than likely riding on the pad wear indicators or down to the actually metal backing of the pad.

Alot of places charge nothing for a visual inspection, but they also assume that if you do indeed need brakes that you will get it taken care of that moment. So take it somewhere you'd like them to work on the car in case the brakes are gone.
