hmmm someone posted this similar incident a year ago but I couldn't locate the thread and I can't remember who exactly posted it. but like everyone else said check your fuses, and check your battery

If it was his battery, wouldn't he not be able to crank the car up? I'm thinking it could be a fuse that the whole lighting system might run through.
Best first step is to check all of your fuses and make sure they aren't open

it's an 07 and it's not the factory battery, so it has been changed.
no problem starting the car or anything, however I'm starting by replacing the battery with a new Bosch 700cca top of the line battery. I will also check the fuses. not clear if I'm looking for a a fuse that maybe loose or burnt out. either way, not sure how ONE fuse can kill the car.
first time that this happened, only the dash light and gauges went dark and came right back up (while driving). second time the car died while going about 40 MPH and also all the lights. it started right back up and everything working. seems like a short but I'm just wondering what can kill everything?
if ALT bad, the engine will still run on battery, with battery light on for a while. If battery bad, then should really not affect the entire car specially while driving since ALT is powering up.
let me know if anything comes to mind and I'll check. thanks again

problem maybe fixed....
no start at all this morning - I go try jumping it and guess what..... neg battery cable comletely off the battery terminal. I'm hoping that;s what was causing all this random on & off and car stalling while driving, etc. it must have been loose, not making good connection, until eventually completely came off. it wasn't visible because of the big plastic covers that go over battery terminals.
if for some reason the problem remains, I will post follow up - thanks to all who assisted in this.
