Anyone have an Aftermarket Head Unit?
hey everyone,
i do not have an IS yet, but i am looking to get most likely a 2010 250 in the very near future and i am doing research on some of the things i may try to add. i have been looking at adding a system to it and may want to change the head unit, but ive been searching and it looks like not very many people change their head? i would not get the flyaudio unit since i dont want to spend that much for what it offers. Are there any other good options on the market? if anyone has an aftermarket head unit i would love to see some photos and which units you have. the giant post about aftermarket systems seemed more focused on the trunk and i havent really been able to find any pictures by searching. if i missed something please feel free to point in that direction though.
would definitely be looking for a touchscreen head with capabilities of changing the eq settings for a sub and such. i am still undecided on whether or not i will try and get one with the stock nav
any information would be greatly appreciated
thanks, tim

there are no dash kits for the car (and you have to leave part of the stock head unit wired into the car or your AC won't work).... so any head unit swap other than fly audio will be a totally custom job.

a handful of people have done it and one from recent memory regretted doing it. Most make a fiberglass trim and take out the cd player portion of the radio and add a radio/double din head unit down there but have to leave the rest above it. It's up to you but not the best car to do it in.

I would not bother changing it, and depending on the model of the car the sound system is very good in my opinion.
Also, if I was you, I would get an IS350 instead of 250 due to the carbon build up issues they have been known to have (completely unrelated to your question though).

Thanks a lot for the responses guys, confirmed what I was thinking so now I'm leaning more towards getting one with nav instead of looking to replace anything on the dash.
Yea I've also been looking at the 350s but my budget (25 tops) I think i would rather get a newer 250 with less miles than the 350 with the price difference and the way I drive (slow hahah). We will see what I end up with though, very excited to hopefully be getting one soon!

Fly Audio is basically your best bet without doing anything custom. Try and get a car that has nav headunit stock so you wont have to spend 1k+ for a FA
Its warrantied yeah, but the fix isnt permanent. But anyways thats for another thread

I wouldn't say the Lexus IS audio is very good ... it's just good. The mid and high sounds like my old Civic EX -- maybe slightly better; the bass is better though. In way of comparison, I have a $70 Sony E888LP headphones and $160 Sennheiser headphones. The Lexus sounds exactly like my Sony E888 headphones.
If you're picky about sound, tried to look for one with ML if you can.

I am one with an aftermarket HU. Lots of work, but well worth it in my opinion. I'm running a clean Kenwood HU with DTA, a pair of Zapco amps on my doors (Hertz HSK165 components) and a Hertz amp on 15" (Memphs C315 in a sealed enclosure). Love it and never looked back! I know that there are lots of processors out there for OE integration, but I actually saved a lot of time and trouble (MSRP on the Audiosn BitOne and the JBL MS8 are upwards of $900.....) by doing my own HU install.
