Default Oil Leak Question

I have a question.... about 3 months ago i got my oil changed at a local Jiffy Lube(Bad Mistake)... i notice a oil leak about 2 months later (not really sure how long is has been leaking for).. at about the same time i noticed the oil leak i was due for another oil change... I inquired about the leak and they said it was coming from the oil filter canister and they didn't put the gasket in... So they changed my oil and put a new gasket in and it still seems to be leaking. So i have taken it back to my mechanic and they said it the oil filter canister should be replaced and if that doesn't work to change the oil filter assembly... What do you guys think about this ? should i try to change the oil myself and replace the filter and gasket and see what happens or is there a good chance its the canister ? I know this is a odd question but i just dont see it being very likely that the canister just magically went bad with no damage. thanks for the input

I would say change the oil yourself and filter gasket to ensure that it's done properly. I know for a fact that if that O-ring isn't changed it may leak, but if there isnt one at all then it will leak for sure. and clean as much of the residue off from the canister and surrounding areas as you can. check again maybe in like 300-500 miles for leaks.

I do all of my own maintenance, and would never trust my car to a repair shop. Even for newbs, the DIY threads on CL make such basic maintenance very simple and easy to understand. When it comes to working on my car, I would rather a mistake be my own fault than someone else's......

Same motto I live by! Ever since I was taken for $1000 while in college for some brake work that ended up just being a $20 minor adjustment to the brake pedal master cylinder arm, I've learned to work on cars by myself and have learned 100% of what I know through the internet. Use the money saved from taking it to the dealership/local shops and purchase tools instead.
