Bad, But Great News....Transmission 176k

Fwiw dealer had replaced my transmission under warranty at 45k miles because one of the bearings was going out. At 40 MPH i would hear a slight whinning sound (thought it was hub bearings at first). I don't beat on the car, so was surprised that the transmission had issues so quickly. All is well now though.

I don't have any pics, but as my SA said "It's nothing to lose sleep over." It seems to be one of those wear and tear things that develop over time. In the event I get a new trans or the current trans rebuilt I'll post them in the thread, but its not going to be anytime soon...

I don't think there's anything to take from this, to be honest. Transmissions don't last forever. Never have. Some get problems a bit sooner than others, but I doubt a problem like this is remotely common enough during the warranty period (even the extended warranty period) for anyone here to worry about it. If it was a common problem, we would have heard about it by now.
Besides which, from the sounds of things, there is no significant problem with your trans, anyways.

How much more expensive is it to replace the transmission rather than to get it rebuilt?
According to the Sewell site, a brand new transmission for the 350 costs about $2.8K whereas the parts for a transmission "overhaul" cost a total of a little under $1K. Then there's the big question of labor. I don't know, but personally, it seems intuitive that replacing a transmission would be simpler and less time consumer than rebuilding one. So if that was the case, I suspect a new transmission wouldn't cost all that much more?

I was quoted $5,086, from Lexus. I am definitely sure a rebuild would be less; however, with the CL discount on Sewell, it's a lot cheaper. I doubt any stealership would charge $2,000 to put it on, considering the SA said it was a drop and install type job. With that being said buying the trans. From Sewell and then finding a Lexus dealership to install it should be around $3600 in actuality and maybe a lil discount from my SA.
I really don't know anything about trans. Rebuilds, longevity of the rebuild, cost, where to get it done, but it seems the most reliable way would be a new trans. If anyone knows about trans rebuilds, chime in......

As far as a rebuild goes it just depends on the person doing it. I've rebuilt a couple tremecs in my day, and on a scale of 1-10 its a solid 7. Also depends on how complex the internals are, what the rings are made of, the extent of the damage and so on. I would say just get a new or low miled used one and swap it out yourself or have a shop do it, forget the stealership they usually won't install a used transmission.
