Even on cars that do not have the smart key system, the starting system is virtually identical. All you are doing when you turn the key is suggesting to the car that you want to start it. There is still an electronic chip in the key that is read to confirm that the start request is legit, and at that point the ECU will activate the starter motor until it deems the started or the timer ends (typically about 8-10 seconds). It's all electronic these days, conventional key or smart key. The only difference is where the key is when the starting is happening: your pocket or stuck in the dash/column.
