@NQR89, sounds like he wants to keep it from happening again. Probably by installing the catch can.

Congrats on te high mileage.

My man! I have 190,000 on my Tacoma, I look forward to taking her into the 300s some day, maybe even more!

The pistons and rings will reduce the issue, but every motor, no matter how tight, has blow-by. And every modern motor, has a positive crank case vent system. The TSB did not alter the PCV system, the intake manifold (they call it the surge tank now...) is always drawing vacuum through the crank-case picking up vapors, be it blow-by, or evaporated/vaporized oil from the splashing, heat, pressure etc. I find it hard to believe the TSB is a total fix. It surely reduces how "messy" the PCV system may have been, but the key word is reduces, not fixes. I respect the engineering Toyota has, but the bolt-on catch can kit isn't much money for the insurance it won't happen again, and is a steal of a deal for those that do not have the TSB done yet and are nearing their 9 year deadline.

I can't imagine putting on that type of mileage in congested SoCal haha.

Sounds like the smell was from solvents/WD40 etc and its evaporated by now.

Hopefully it's just things burning off from the repairs and the smell will go away soon. Keep us updated

I personally wouldn't, just because there is a warranty that covers the issue and i'm not sure if installing an oil catch can would cause issues with that later.

Plus, after seeing my engine disassembled into pieces, I don't plan on keeping this car past the warranty period. I fully trust the technicians and everything, but there's just too many pieces that got disassembled and put back together. When your talking about a motor, even the slightest errors can cause big issues later, IMO.

I know, as much as I'd like to get my car fixed I also have a part of me that is a little worried about the engine being disassembled and reassembled. But one of the main reasons why I'm leaning more towards getting the repairs because I weighed it out to be more beneficial in my case as my car has quite a bit of mileage and I see quite a bit of oil that's being burned as well. I know it's not a complete rebuild as there is much more that needs to be done to be considered as such, but having new pistons/rings would definitely be a benefit in my case of a higher mileage vehicle.

Diffidently a lot of Murphy's Law flirted with having that much work done by the dealerships, or anyone for that matter. I looked at it as a plus though, basically have a refreshed motor. The bolt on catch can fix I'm using has me a lot less worried about putting miles on the car even when it reaches the post TSB 9 year deadline. The new IS250s that are not applicable to the TSB as they come from the factory with the new internals should use a catch can solution right away, as they are not covered at all once their warranty is passed.

Looking at the carbon buildup on the valves, even if one does not get the MIL/CEL/DTS symptoms, one is still loosing VE, MPGs and power due to buildup causing air flow restrictions in the area-- worse yet I can imagine all the valves have a different extent of buildup over time--- what does that mean? un-even air fuel ratios in each of the cylinders!!! One cylinder might be running 13.5:1 all the time, while another 15.2:1 etc- power robbing, EGT raising, cat wearing, gas in oil causing suckyness right there!! After the IS250 was bought, I didn't drive it hardly at all until the bolt on kit was in and installed. I want expected reliability, power and MPGs!

I have no idea, but I hope it is their fault. I can't imagine how it couldn't be.

Wow, amazing that you have ~240K miles on your IS, is it awd? Also have you had any transmission issues so far?
