The wife is complaining about the rough ride. we need new tires so I was thinking about going from a 225/40-18 front to a 225/45-18 and rears from 255/40-18 to 255/45-18. Anybody make this change have any feedback?

Before anybody flames me, we have ****ty roads here and not much of a freeway commute

Running a higher profile tire will make the ride a little bit more forgiving but probably not as much as you want, especially if you stay with the recommended speed rating. Higher speed rated tires have stiffer sidewalls which make for a rougher ride but also give you better cornering. Also of note, after hitting tire size calculator online I see that going from the 40 to the 45 (at least on the front) will make your overall tire diameter almost an inch greater than what is currently on the car. Do realize that this is widely discouraged because it can affect the cars ABS and traction control systems, which are supplied information regarding the rotation of the wheels. This data is altered when you change the diameter of the tire. I am a novice when it comes to tire info and I'm sure more experienced members will chime in. If it were me, I would convince her to deal with it. It really isn't that rough. My Accord rides just about as stiff as the IS does.

Some of the ride quality has to do with the fact that the 2IS model is a SPORT, "luxury" car and the suspension is meant to be more firm. Perhaps a GS or LS would be a better fit?

Rough ride from an IS lol? I doubt larger than stock sidewall is going to make much of a difference at all. Might be time to upgrade to an LS 460 if she is that picky on the ride...

She likes small cars, so a GS or LS not really an option. It was the IS or a Corolla. How would you guys like to roll around in a Corolla? Were going to a W rated tire. Any useful info other than Slammer1?

What car did she ride in before? Can always downgrade with the stock 17" wheels.

Never heard of a rough ride in a Lexus. It's the smoothest of all my previous cars before my suspension mods.

instead of getting a higher sidewall and risk messing with the car's sensor, would you consider going down to 17 in rims?

This should make a very noticeable difference in ride quality, and I bet there are a lot of members who would be willing to trade their 17 rims for 18 rims for free. Also, type of tires play a big role on comfort too, the stock tires were pretty infamous for how bad they were

wanted to give you guys an update. we ended up getting some new Yokohama's 235/40/18 fronts and 255/40/18 rears. The front profile actually look like the rears now instead of being stretched out on a "too wide" rim like with the 225. I didnt want to chance the VSC getting confused so decided to stay with the 40 series tires but went a little wider in the fronts to give a higher sidewall. The Yokohama's definitely are a little taller, ride quieter and better. So glad to get ride of the old Bridgestones.
