They had better replace that motor cuz that is just insane for they to consider a total motor failure at 70k miless normal for a Toyota!

Didn't the powertrain warranties get extended to 100k miles on models that were repaired under the recall? I thought my wife received something from Lexus at some point indicating as much for her '08... Perhaps I am mistaken.

I think the OP said he never had the valve spring recall performed.

I actually found out that my car did have the valve spring recall done. After my car was given up as a lease, it had all the recalls performed which included the valve springs before I purchased the car. And yes, the models that have the recall performed on, the powertrain warranty is extended to 100,000 miles.

But the good news is that Lexus is covering it under warranty. Good thing I won't have to be calling up Lexus Corporate to complain.

That's great news, now the question is are they going to provide you with a new shorts block or rebuild the currect motor. I personaly would push for a new short block as that type of damage can cause a valve to drop (not sure if it happend to your motor) causing damage to the cylinder side walls and piston.

If my motor ever goes, I'm definitely going this route.
will this work for an IS250?

They're going to give me a new cylinder head cause that was cracked on the passenger side one. Other than that, they will take apart the engine this weekend to determine if there's any bent valves or damage to the pistons and such.

^That really is good to hear; glad they are taking care of their customer.

They HAD BETTER tear into that motor and not just replace the head. Seeing that there was major valvetrain failure, that is just asking for piston-to-valve contact! Of course they are going to take the cheapest way out and replace only what is broken; but I hope they make it good as new afterwards!

They give you a nice loaner?

Lol, I work at an Acura dealer but across the street, there is a Lexus dealer owned by the same person. The Lexus techs also get to use the Acura shop since it's bigger. Because of that, I get to see the work being done on my car. Right now, the subframe and engine is out of the car. The piston is completely untouched by the valves and the cylinders are perfectly fine. They will also replace the cam gears so I don't get the rattle anymore while they're at it.

From what it seems like, the valve spring for some reason jumped out of place and and did not seat back properly. So the exhaust valve would not fully close and without the spring functioning properly and being stuck, the rocker arm gave out over time. I'll take some pictures when I can on Monday at work. Don't know if it's that I'm an employee, they pushed Lexus to help me out or if Lexus does actually care about their customers. But either way, I'm happy it worked out. Except for the fact I could not get a loaner since I'm not old enough.

^So are our 2IS motors non-interference then? I just assumed that all high-compression motors are interference motors. Maybe you were just VERY lucky to not have piston-to-valve contact.
