Default AWD Specs

Howdy.

I looked in the owner's manual and couldn't find any info regarding the AWD system. Reading the forums, I saw something that the car has a 30/70 power split during normal ops, but can go up to 50/50 if needed.

Are there any other details regarding the AWD system? Just curious to see if the system is more involved such as left vs. right when cornering, etc.

Thanks.

I can't imagine the answer being anything but somewhat complex, but from what I know there is more to the system than just AWD. There's the VSC/TSC (stability control/traction control) components as well. I believe with the AWD system you have the power split you mentioned (30/70 up to 50/50). The VSC however will take certain actions depending on wheel spin (applying brakes after detecting wheel spin) to help you regain control of the car if you lose it.

To be fair, it's not the best system out there, but it is very advanced. My personal experience has been the car becomes a monster with it off, and sometimes in deep snow you do better disabling it (you need wheel spin sometimes to get through snow). I find myself leaving it on most of the time.

Hope this helps...

Edit:

Another thread (I searched for you for AWD but there's not much on that, but there is more on VSC) had a good video posted that shows what VSC is capable of. http://wn.com/toyota_traction_control_demonstration

I haven't found more on the AWD specifically, but you may want to search for Toyota AWD systems.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I can't imagine it being simple, but was curious if anybody had any idea on its details.

Never tried VCS and TRAC off; maybe I should try it in an empty lot sometime, haha.

The differential ratio is 4.10 for the AWD IS250. It is a tad shorter than the 3.91 that is offered in the RWD automatic IS250. AWD vehicles get the steering damper plus an intrusion into driver floor because of the transfer case. AWD adds over 200lbs to the curb weight. 17" wheels are standard with the same size tires all around.

The last time I looked into this it was 20/80 F/R until later (2011 I think), it became 30/70
No torque vectoring though

I have the IS350AWD as well and I have to say you will really need to make some effort to break loose. But I would love to see what you think.

I leave the TRAC systems off most of the time, but even with that its rare for me to spin my tires.

Yeah, this. If you're anywhere with a little bit of sand/gravel or the ground is a bit wet it'll break loose pretty easy. Otherwise, the AWD does provide an incredible amount of grip and overall traction. I have managed to get it sideways on occasion with the VSC off but the car quickly straightens right out. Honestly I'd prefer this anyways with the winters I have to get through.
