My interpretation of the is(x)50 abbreviation is/was that the x is used because most mods fit both the is250 and is350 so instead of labeling it as one or the other just saying something fits or works for the is(x)50 allows the is owner to be confident that a part or mod works for their car. I'm sure it works with the sellers.

A lot of Japanese imports down here, its all IS250 or IS350
Previous generations were a mix of Lexus/Toyota badges that were at times different spec:
GS300 = Aristo (only the Aristo had option of the 2JZGTE?)
LS400 = Celsior
IS200 or IS300 = Altezza
Those RX things = Harrier

Before Lexus launched in Japan, they all had Toyota model names.
SC = Soarer (Until 2005)
ES = Windom (Until 2006)
IS = Altezza (Until 2005)
GS = Aristo (Until 2005)
LS = Celsior (Until 2006)
RX = Harrier (Continued until 2012, RX launched in 2008)
LX = Land Cruiser Cygnus (LX470 Only, never launched as Lexus model in Japan)
GX = Land Cruiser Prado (Kind of, never launched as Lexus model in Japan)

BMWs use E9X for their different platforms within the E90 group. e90,e91,e92, e93. Just use the x for parts that work on all or talking about the generation in general.

I thought the camry was the IS equiv? I parked next to one and it was eerily similar including same shape tail lights. Even my gf said it looked similar.

Both the Is250 and 350 does not share same engine as the Camry.
But the IS250 share the same engine as the Toyota Crown Royal. That's why I said it was the closest match. But chassis and everything else, IS is an animal of its own.

I would think the Camry is more like the ES

The IS and GS are similar in North America, beyond that there are no Toyota models that share a similar platform. In Japan there are several models that share a similar platform to the IS, such as the Crown and Mark X.

I think the Crown is more like a GS than an IS and the Mark X is the next generation Mark II/Chaser?
