Is my mechanic right about the IS350??
I talked to my trusted mechanic / uncle about what he thinks of getting an IS350...
Being family, I always take my car (98 ES300) to him and trust him completely with it.
When I asked him about upgrading to a used IS350, he stated that toyota/lexus reliability is not what it used to be and he would not buy an IS350 with over 60k miles on it. He even recommended a G35 over the IS350 in terms of reliability, which really surprised me based on what I've read in the past few weeks.
What do you think about what he said? Is it worth listening to? Or should I just get one of my alternative choices: G35 or GS400?
Thank you,
David

From what I've seen, most of the "problems" our cars run into are covered under CSP's, at least the MAJOR "problems" . I had to have my whole engine rebuilt according to the csp when I had my misfire and couldn't go over 20mph, but the tow and EVERYTHING was covered even though my car was no longer under warranty.

I have an 06 IS250 and yes, there were problems. They were mostly covered by a CSP or thru warranty. I have over 150K on it and I still think it's one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned.

From what I know, Lexus is currently still the most reliable brand out there. But between an IS350 or G35, the IS350 is a better choice.
However, my IS350 has been problematic. Over the 3 years I've owned it, it's had maybe $20K in repairs done on it. Luckily, I didn't have to pay a single penny for those repairs. It was all under warranty, the first maybe $3K in repairs. Then I blew my engine at 70,400. Literally 400 miles out of warranty but Lexus was willing to pay for the repair cost for a new engine and labor. Lexus is honestly a good company that cares about it's customers satisfaction and I'm not sure Nissan/Infiniti would be that nice to pay up a $17K repair cost when a car isn't even under warranty anymore.

Not just for the IS but any of the 2006-2010 L-Fineese models are subject to poor quality assembly, materials vs a 2005, but most of this has been getting better against since the new GS and CT came to market

Not saying it's a lemon, but most folks on these boards with a 350 have been mostly problem free. A Lexus is still a car hence it's not perfect. Just because you buy a Honda doesn't mean it won't be a lemon or just because you buy a BMW doesn't mean it can't be problem free. But stereotypes are mostly true.

mechanic is smoking crack saying the infiniti has more longevity than the lexus. you can find many IS models that have been bought for and driven soft by wives, daughters, and old people that will still have plenty of life left in them. I'm with the people above that say stay away from the '06 models only because that was the first year of production... if you can get an '08 or newer, all the kinks should be worked out by those models.

Well, the issue with my car has always been powertrain problems. I've never had any other common problems that most others experience. The engine went bad and it's still the same engine in the newer GS and IS. Water pump went bad, ECU went bad, catalytic converter went bad, and many CEL's come on.
