Default What Mileage starts to get too much?

First off, I'm in the UK, it might not make a difference to anything, but thought I should mention it

I've been considering the IS-250 as my first car, but I don't have a huge budget (around £6k) Although there are plenty available, most are with a reasonably high mileage (over 100k miles) What sort of mileage should I start being concerned with? When do running costs rise? Should I be looking at sub 60k only (in which case I need to choose another car as there aren't any in my price range) or are 160k cars still fine?

I'm looking for an auto, with the media pack. Most of the other options I'm not too concerned with (if it makes a difference)

Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

It's not so much the mileage, but the care the vehicle in those past miles. If the seller has documentation/receipts that everything on the car was taken care of well, I don't see a problem with purchasing a used 120k mile car.

My first IS had over 110 miles, I had no issues buying that at all. The previous owner took great care of it.

I would only start thinking more about it if they had 200k+

isn't premium petrol prohibitively expensive over there? The IS isn't the best car for gas consumption
~10L/100km

^^ They're good to know. I've seen a few between 120-160k that are well within my budget (~4-5k), and with the specs I want. obviously I haven't looked into them too much, so I can't comment on the logbook etc. From the sounds of it the mileage is fine, as long as it looks well taken care of & has a good logbook.

It's not much worse than diesel to be honest. I'm also not expecting to do a huge amount of miles, and most will be fairly short journeys so a diesel isn't going to be much benefit. Ideally, I would have a car with better fuel consumption, but none of the alternatives seem to have all the other features I'm looking for.

here in USA, I would buy one with 120k miles without hesitation. Make sure you have a good mechanic near your house though, just in case (jic). That was my number one requirement, and the biggest reason i bought lexus over bmw. I have a great shop 5 miles from my house. http://local.yahoo.com/info-33664201...ews&writebox=1

I've got 100k on mine. Bought it a few months back. Still runs like a dream. Of course, a lot of it depends on how the previous owner(s) took care of it. If you take care of it these cars should last for a while.

If its well taken care of, I would buy a car that will last me up to 150k. After 150k, things start to deteriorate and need to be replace despite how well they were taken care of IMO.

That means if I plan on keeping the car for 4 years, and drive an average of 10k a year, the most mileage I would be looking at is 110k. A well taken care for lexus will last you atleast to 150k, but don't buy a car near its max mileage if you plan on keeping it for a while IMO.

i am going say 150k would be the limit in my book. anything after that you have to look at the suspension parts. after 200k you probably have to look into the tranny and motor. Also depends on how the last owner took care of the car. Where i use to work 80% of the cars that came with over 200k miles for their "free oil change" were shot. leaks everywhere. ball joints broken. you name i probably seen it. but the owners never cared they just want the free stuff. i had one come in with a bottle cap with a screw in the middle as the oil cap
