2006 is 250 cold engine start up noise (rattle)
Hi, I bought a used 06 lexus is250 several months back in may 2013. Recently, maybe due to temperatures, my car rattles on cold or even warm start ups. I've read countless threads on this and this is the attachment that explains the problem.

HOWEVER, the warranty only covers up to 70k or 72 months and my car is at 92k mileage right now. I am aware that this repair is a costly one, is it worth it? Is there anyway I can get lexus to repair it for no cost? What should I do in a situation like this? If you have come across a similar problem please reply...

does yours constantly do this on cold engine starts? mine very rarely does this maybe like once every two to three months. mine will also have the rpm drop on cold start when at idle (but again very rarely). i video taped mine and took it to the dealer maintenance showing them the video but they didnt fix anything because it didnt have the rattling noise or the rpm drops while they were servicing it. btw my car is at 89k miles right now.

My engine does that too. I didn't look too much into it because my motorcycle and a few previous cars did the same thing on really cold (almost freezing temperature) starts. The way it was explained to me (from numerous mechanics and motorcycle specialist, etc) is that there are some engines that use more plastic/metallic materials parts than others (O-Rings, gaskets, plastic mechanical parts, etc.) and what happens is on freezing temperatures it shrinks or sometimes hardens but then gets back normal once the car reaches normal operating temperature.
My car makes a short less than 2 second rattle if i haven't touched it for a few days but then goes away if i drive it regularly. My motorcycle would make a similar semi loud knocking sound on really cold starts during the fall but if it was above 60 degrees outside and/or my bike would be sitting in the sun, it would start up fine no sound. But once the motor reached an operating temperature of 96 degrees or more it would go away. I figured it was the same thing happening to my IS because it didn't start happening until recent cold winter temperatures. But my car drives perfectly fine other wise.
If you regularly let your car warm up before driving, I think you would be fine.

Just got an oil change yesterday cause it was bout that time. Anyways, before the oil change, the rattle kept coming back during cold starts. After getting my oil replaced to the Castro Edge Synthetic oil the noise went away! Its been about 5 days and I haven't heard it yet. I don't wana spend a crazy amount out of my own pocket to fix this and I read around that this doesnt hurt the engine or w.e but thanks for the help! I guess its jst "one of those things" lol

Sounds similar to the "carbon build up" issues plaguing a lot of the '06-'10 IS250's. From what i have read Lexus extended the warranty to 9yrs unlimited miles. I'd check your VIN to see if your vehicle is covered.

I checked Lexus.com's list of recalls but dont see the anything related to your issue. I have a 2012 so my vehicle isnt effected and haven't received the notice in the mail . I'd check with the guys in this thread: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...ld-up-csp.html as most have gone through this process already
