How long did you alternator last? My car is 2008 with ~51,000 miles. I actually check the alternator voltage when the car is idling. and I thought it showed normal voltage (can't remember the number) and the batteries seem to be charged fine.

A little over 59,000 miles. The battery light went on - so I was driving into work with the intent to purchase a new battery and boom, car dies on the way home. Nav was first to go. Dash lit up like Christmas lights and then the car shut off.
My '06 IS350 was manufacturered in Oct '05; the battery was replaced as a preventative maintenance thing this Aug '13. It still had "acceptible" CCAs, according to Lexus. The key is checking the electrolyte levels at regular intervals; I always checked it during my oil change.
Pretty much the same story here. Took delivery of my car first week December '05 (also an Oct 05 build, I think?), and replaced the original battery as a precautionary measure prior to the polar vortex in January 2014. That's eight years and one month of service. Didn't test it prior to replacement, but it still had enough vim and vigor to start the engine in 18 degree temps, albeit cranking a bit less energetically than its replacement. Like Gville, I credit its long life to regularly removing the battery caps and adding distilled water when needed.
The battery is under warranty for given period. They replaced mine since its health was below optimum amount during its 4th year. Now I use CTEK charger to keep it full since I do not drive it often.
Car batteries are not deep cycle batteries so keep them charged so expand the battery's life.
Bought mine back in April 06 and still going strong. Starting to look for the replacement as a preventative measurement. Our battery group size is 24. I was thinking of replacing it with Sears 'DieHard Advanced Gold AGM Battery - Group Size 34' - had someone use this battery before? if so, any modification to the battery holder sleeve? thnx
