Default CV Joint/Boot Repair

I noticed that my car would make a clunk sound when I would turn my wheel all the way to the left going slow or when I'm decelerating. I took it to the dealer and they quoted me $2,000 for just the parts to replace the right and left front axles. I did a little research on my own and it seems like just the CV joint and boot need to be replaced.

Is the dealership trying to make me replace parts that I don't need?

Yeah the axles on the AWD are stupid expensive. about $680 a piece, thats why I am afraid to replace them. CV joint and boot kits are exactly what you would need but replacing it would depend on how much damage was done to the axles joints. Joint and Boot kits are about $50 more or less

I would take your car to a local shop and ask their recommendation as well before you do anything at the dealer. My local shop replaces CV joints for $200 a side plus parts. You may only need the boot which is about 25 bucks

Thanks for the response and advice NY. Yea, I'll definitely take it to a local shop for a second opinion.

Nitro, please keep us updated on if you were able to find a boot repair kit or ultimately had to have the axles replaced. I;m worried this may have to be done to my AWD done the line at some point

I feel the same way. In the past members were able to buy the boot repair kit, but apparently Lexus has stopped producing that kit. We need to find a cheaper solution to this problem.

I just took it to a reputable auto shop this morning that I went to before when I had to change my brake rotors/pads and do a brake fluid flush, and they lifted it up and showed me that only the clamp where the CV boot is attached to seeped a little bit of grease, probably on a harsh bump or turn. The boot wasn't leaking anywhere else besides that and the axle was totally fine. If the axle did need to be replaced, like the dealer had recommended, it would make a constant click/thump sound. He said the clunk might've been from the nuts/bolts loosening up in the subframe so he tightened all of them up for me. So far, no more clunk!

Great to hear!! Glad you didn't have to drop money on unnecessary replacements.

I noticed the other day that my front CV was flinging grease on the inside of my wheel. The dealer told me that there was a slit on the boot but I could not actually see it so i have to figure out where its leaking from and how to get grease back into the boot.

Ive tried those universal Speedy boot replacement before and they sucked so if anyone has a better solution please let me know

Did the dealer state what was causing the CV joint to be bad in the first place? Replacing the entire axle will ensure that no damage will be afflicted to the new CV joint.

Dealerships do that to protect themselves from people scheming and complaining that the noise is back.

Edit: Didn't see the OP reply and problem fixed. Question.. bolts on the sub frame should not be loosening up from bumps? That sounds very dangerous.
