Melting
Hi Everyone,
I know I am not the only one with a melting car, and I am curious has anyone tried anything to slow down the break down of the dash and doors.
I have tried to get lexus to fix this repeatedly and every time it is they will go 50/50 on the door (the dealer said so about 1000 per door, and it has ruined some of my clothes since it rubs off) and I would have to pay for the labor on my dash which the dealer said was about 250-350. Which i still feel is really unfair since its poor manufacturing, so I refuse to take them up on their unfair offer.
thanks in advanced
Also for anyone who hasn't seen this when a toyota dealer has come out said this is manufacturing

and for some humor on the situation

On the dash, If they are willing to cover the cost of the dash, I would recommend taking them up on that offer and paying the 250 -300 for the labor. I think that is about as a good a deal as you will get... On the door panels I had a similar quote from the dealer, around $1200 for the two front panels including labor, which was 50% off as a good will. I felt there was not much good will in that quote so I declined... I ended up finding two used front panels from a 2009 model year on ebay in perfect condition for $170ea shipped. Problem solved... This may be an option for you... Good luck

I believe alot of the melting has to do with the cleaners previously used to clean the window and of course the dash. Once the chemicals bed into the dash materials, it just starts de-grading faster. This is why I no longer use spray-on Stoner window cleaner; use only the wipes. Also only use a damp microfiber cloth on the dash ONLY after sitting out of the sun over night.

iNfectious, I am super interested in doing this to my doors on my F. They look like absolute crap. I didn't realize you could disassemble the panel like that. If you have any pics or details of the process I would be very interested.

^Well, I don't think its a bolt-on/bolt-off affair; there are probably plastic welds or something holds the pieces together that were broken in order to do that. Never had to remove a door panel on my 2IS yet, but I assume they're made like the previous 10 door panels I've looked at.

Correct plastic welds hold the top and bottom parts together. I grinded the top of the welds off and I used small short screws to reassemble them.
You can find vinyl at your local fabric store. The good thing about wrapping the door panels is that it is pressed in at all sides and there are no wild angles except at the door bar. Unfortunately I didn't document much of this project.
