Create a journal, monitor the oil dipstick, write down how much oil you have to add and the duration. Are you getting any blue smoke out of the exhaust? Are you seeing an performance or difference in fuel mileage? Are you sure the oil isn't simply leaking out somewhere? Pull some spark plugs and see if the plugs are "wet" with oil.

My IS250 is burning engine oil like mad too..
I am using Mobile 1 5w-30 and changing at regular intervals at 8000km and the mechanic said that there is barely any oil left at oil change. One time, even the engine warning light came on.
The mechanic told me to switch to 10w-30 to see if it helps with prolonging the oil life.

I would switch to a higher mileage oil immediately and begin monitoring oil levels every 250-300 miles or so. if its burning more than a quart every 1000 miles, then make the switch to 10w30 high mileage. run the engine, give it gas and see if theres blue smoke emitting from the tail pipes. if there is that's a sign of burning oil. ive seen a lot of bmw 7 series in the past with blue smoke so its a common thing for higher mileage engines to do that. all depends on how hard the car was driven and how well it was maintained by the previous owner.

Use something besides mobil 1. That company's oil burns easier than most.

from my experience
ive used: 5w-30 full synthetic - which burns oil like crazy
5w-30 semi synthetic - which burns less (don't have to top up quite often)
10w-30 full synthetic - which burns way less and also reduces my start up rattle.
Will be going back to 10w for the next oil change, it runs well for my old 07 =]

Everyone must keep in mind that each motor is driven differently, broken-in differently, and therefore has worn differently. Just because one oil burns through one owners IS350, doesn't mean it will on all others.
I for one have been using Mobil 1 FULL SYN since day 1, and have yet to loose a drop of oil on the dipstick in-between oil changes.

Mobil 1 is known to burn easier among many autocross/track people. They changed their formula from 100% synthetic a few years ago. Yes, it might not be noticeable on daily driving if the car wasn't abused. I have a 07 IS350 which I am the original owner of and it never burns regardless of what brand I use, but I prefer amsoil after finding it to be the best when racing.
